DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND FIRE MANAGEMENT

Manage and reduce fire risk to protect Arizona's people, communities, and wildland areas to champion the health of Arizona's natural resources. The Department of Forestry and Fire Management provides services through strategic implementation of cooperative natural resources and fire assistance programs, development and support of statewide fire policies, and coordination of resources across all-lands and jurisdictions.

Provides technical and administrative supervision to engine crews. Directs the operation of a wildland fire engine, responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment and ensures the engine is kept in a full state of readiness. During initial attack fire suppression activities, locates fireline and directs and participates in fireline construction, backfiring and burnout operations, engine and pump operations, tree falling and holding/patrol/mop up operations. May be required to be a fully qualified chain saw operator. Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior during suppression of wildland fire incidents. Implements formal and informal training programs to comply with policy and regulations. Participates in wildland fire and safety training.

• Serves as senior wildland firefighter on a wildland fire engine.
• Independently performs engine operation duties in the suppression of wildland fires and prescribe fire.
  
• Drives engine to fire locations in consideration of safety of crew and equipment, and how the equipment can be best used in control and mop-up operations.
  
• Instructs crew members in specific tasks and techniques; conducts on-the-job training; distributes and controls work assignments among employees, assures timely accomplishment of assigned tasks; maintains work notes and records; reports on work accomplishments, ensures that the work is carried out safely; reports on performance problems and issues.
  
• Responsible for supervision of the crew in the absence of the supervisor.
  
• Participates in wildland fire and safety training in the techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and in the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in fire line activities, with emphasis on those used in the particular function assigned.
  
• Participates in crew proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and fire critiques.
  
• Ensures own and other's welfare and safety in all aspects of the assignment.
  
• Drive on State business.
  
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of leadership.
  
• Strategies, tactics, and suppression methods used in containment and control of wildfires and wildland fires.
  
• Fire behavior including causes of wildland fire, influences of temperature, humidity, wind, topography, slope, and fuels.

Skills in:

• Performing and directing others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effective use of water and additives.
• Chainsaw operation.
  
• Maintaining specialized equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix
  situations.
  

Ability to:

• A valid Arizona Driver's License.

Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended.
