The Highlights:
The Assistant Director/Academic Advisor reports to the Director of Advising in LAS Advising Services and liaises with the chairs of the departments of Applied Diplomacy, Economics, International Studies, Public Policy, and the School of Public Service. They are responsible for the academic advising of current and prospective students in these programs; other majors may be added or changed if enrollments fluctuate significantly. This includes direct advising (in-person and online), the production of advising support materials for students and faculty in multiple formats. The person in this position must have thorough knowledge of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences' undergraduate and graduate curricula, policies, and procedures and other university academic offerings, and university policies that pertain to students. This individual will liaise among department faculty, the Office for Academic Advising Support, and other University partners.
 

What You'll Do:

  • Advises current and potential Applied Diplomacy, Economics, International Studies, Public Policy, and the School of Public Service students, and other declared LAS majors and minors (as needed) regarding course choices, major/program selection, progress toward graduation, graduate and professional school options, career opportunities, and tuition/financial implications. Refers students to other university offices when necessary. 
  • Leads and coordinates holistic academic advising initiatives in the departments of Applied Diplomacy, Economics, International Studies, Public Policy, and the School of Public Service. May re-assigns or suggest appropriate faculty advisors to students based on their academic interests; creates and maintains advising support materials for students and faculty in multiple print and electronic formats; trains faculty on model advising practices; supports faculty mentoring efforts; makes recommendations to the chair(s) and the Dean's Office regarding course placements, substitutions, and waivers. 
  • Attends regular meetings with LAS Advising Service staff and the meetings for their assigned/associated academic departments/programs; provides regular feedback to LAS Advising Service advising process (new student advising, probation and dismissal, graduation) leaders; assists the Associate Director with accurately accounting for all program requirement changes; assists with degree conferral, newly declared students' record analysis, transfer credit approvals and ensuring the appropriate application of college credit toward the degrees of new, continuing, and graduating Applied Diplomacy, Economics, International Studies, Public Policy, and the School of Public Service students and other declared LAS majors using the Degree Progress Report. 
     
What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or counseling preferred. 
  • Two or more years of full-time experience in academic advising or equivalent. 
  • Familiarity with one or more of the academic disciplines listed above preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a group. 
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies using good and independent judgement. 
  • Ability to juggle numerous projects and tasks simultaneously, and to meet deadlines for each.  
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office, PeopleSoft, and social media platforms.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work is required.
 
The anticipated hiring range for this position is: $47,783.00 to $58,676.00 per year. 
The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
