What are the responsibilities and job description for the SENIOR TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER, CALTRANS position at Department of Transportation?
Under the general direction of a Supervising Transportation Engineer, Caltrans, the Senior Transportation Engineer directs and supervises personnel assigned to the project(s) and the Construction Field Office. The incumbent serves as the Resident Engineer (RE) on large and/or complex projects and is responsible for administering the construction contract and reviewing the work performed by State and contractor forces. As the RE, the incumbent provides direction to staff on construction safety as it relates to contract administration and ensures that contractors comply with all contract requirements. Additionally, the incumbent may be assigned as the Construction Engineer (CE) on smaller projects located adjacent to or near the primary RE assignment. In the CE role, the incumbent directs and supervises the associated field office staff, administers construction contracts, and reviews the work of State and contractor forces. The CE is also responsible for advising assigned RE(s) on construction safety matters related to contract administration.

Position located at 119 N Maple Ste A Corona, Riverside County.

This position may require the incumbent to telework and/or perform in office or off site work at assigned locations that are climate controlled and illuminated with artificial lighting. The position requires both indoor and outdoor work, with daily field visits. Office environments may experience temperature fluctuations due to periodic heating and air conditioning issues. Offices may consist of fixed buildings or trailers and may be co located with external partners, local agencies, and/or contractors in a combined project office.The work schedule generally consists of a five day workweek but may require travel, after hours assignments, weekend work, and night shifts. Vacation and leave usage may be restricted during peak periods. Night work requires the ability to work safely under artificial lighting.Field activities may occur in metropolitan or remote areas and can involve exposure to active construction sites and on or off highway vehicular traffic. Outdoor work includes exposure to sunlight, moving traffic, loud noise, and weather conditions ranging from extreme heat (up to 120°F) to extreme cold (as low as 15°F), as well as strong winds, rain, sleet, snow, and dust. Duties may require working on uneven terrain near heavy equipment, both on foot and in vehicles, and may involve potential contact with hazardous materials, pesticides, and chemicals such as paints, cleaners, and solvents.Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)—including a hard hat, safety vest or approved safety shirt, suitable footwear, and any other required equipment—must be worn at all times in the field without exception.The incumbent may be assigned work based on Divisional and/or Departmental needs and may be placed in any office within District 8, which includes San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.
