Compensation:

  • Annual Salary Range:  $57,428.80 - $60,382.40
  • Hourly Pay Range:  $27.61 - $29.03

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This Highway Maintenance Assistant Supervisor position works in the District One Gage office located in Topeka, KS. This position provides effective leadership to their assigned work unit. This includes such things as leading by example, effective training, coaching, and providing employee development opportunities. This position assists the supervisor and managerial staff in directing highway maintenance activities for a specific geographic region or facility. Work involves having the responsibility for supervising the safe and efficient operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment and supervising a crew of highway maintenance workers. 

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Serves as the assistant to the Sub-Area supervisor, monitoring crew performance for quality and quantity of work accomplished. 
  • Assists the supervisor in scheduling, planning, coordinating, and prioritizing of the maintenance work plan for the Sup-Area. 
  • Determines the proper procedures, equipment, and materials to be used to perform various maintenance activities. 
  • Performs general supervisory functions including interviewing and selecting prospective employees or promotional candidates, coaching employees, resolving disputes among crew members, and conducting employee performance reviews. 
  • Represents KDOT in work-related problems with property owners, government officials, and the traveling public to offer guidance and resolve issues. 
  • Operates a pickup daily and performs physical tasks in the maintenance of equipment and the highway.
  • Due to the nature of the work, this position may be required to work additional hours when needed, including nights and weekends.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Five years of experience in highway maintenance that meets the needs of the agency. 
  • One year of lead worker/supervisory experience. 
  • Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
  • Valid Class A CDL at the time of appointment.

Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements:

  • This position is subject to pre-employment physical capacity testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.
  • This CDL position is subject to drug and alcohol testing under the authority of the US Department of Transportation. The selected candidate will be required to pass a DOT pre-employment/pre-duty drug test as a condition of employment in this position. (This position will also require you to participate in random testing, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.)
  • Any Commercial Driver who has received a Confirmed Positive Result or the Equivalent and has not successfully completed all Rehabilitation Program requirements and follow-up testing requirements is not eligible for this position. (Per SOM 2.1.10).
