The Department of State Hospitals-Atascadero is a secure public sector hospital providing inpatient forensic services for mentally ill adult males who are court committed throughout the State of California.
INTERVIEWS WILL BE CONDUCTED ONSITE, IN-PERSON.
The Laboratory Assistant - Phlebotomist will be supervised by the Supervising Registered Nurse and Supervising Laboratory Assistant I in Central Medical Services at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:
- Performs phlebotomy of patients and employees efficiently and effectively. Prepares specimens for in-house analysis and/or for transport to external reference laboratories. This includes labeling, accessioning, centrifugation, separation of serum/plasma, and documentation procedures.
- Performs order entry and results retrieval from the laboratory computer system and/or from paper files.
- Analyzes various types of specimens quantitatively, using various available methodologies, accurately, precisely, and in a timely manner.
- Performs quality control as needed on CLIA Waived machines.
- Answers telephones promptly, courteously, and effectively.
- Maintains reference laboratory supplies. Periodically investigates "overdue" send-out reports.
- Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance. Demonstrates willingness and ability to work compatibly with co-workers, supervisors, and patients, and to voluntarily assist as needed. Maintain a high level of professionalism. Completes mandatory Core Training sessions as scheduled. Maintains state phlebotomy certification requirements (i.e. ongoing continuing education).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EITHER I:
Six months of experience in laboratory work similar to that described in Definition of Levels (Incumbents perform assigned, varied, standardized, and nontechnical laboratory procedures in processing or preparing laboratory specimens, materials and supplies, and in operation of specialized mechanical laboratory equipment while receiving on-the-job training)
OR
II: Education: Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade;
OR
III: Satisfactory completion of a formalized laboratory work experience and training program of at least three months' duration, such as those conducted under Manpower Development and Training Act, Work Incentive Program, or similar work experience programs conducted by State agencies.
