Job Description and Duties

ASSISTANT STATE ARCHEOLOGIST (PERMANENT INTERMITTENT) – CULTURAL RESOURCES DIVISION/ARCHEOLOGICAL RESEARCH PROGRAM

The reporting location for this position is McClellan, CA. This position will work under the supervision of Senior State Archaeologist.

This position will work in support of the archaeological collections management work in the State Archaeological Collections Research Facility (SACRF), part of the Cultural Resources Division, under the direction of the Senior State Archaeologist. This position supports of the Department’s ongoing archaeological projects funded by the Cannabis Watershed Protection Program as well as its responsibilities under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team including State Archaeologists, Department Coordinating Tribal Liaisons, data and GIS specialists, the NAGPRA program staff, and Tribal partners to provide support in various aspects of collections management including building and maintaining collection files; assist with the basic curatorial needs of the collections; update electronic records for objects and collections; provide research support for district projects and research requests including researching collections and related documentation, digitizing archaeological records and reports; research and compile information in support of NAGPRA consultations; support collections visits from tribal partners and researchers; and do other related work. Collections management experience is preferred. This position provides the opportunity to work the Department's vast archaeological collections to accomplish meaningful work in environmental protection and repatriation.

Training and Development Assignments may be considered.

This position may work up to 1500 hours in any calendar year.

This position is designated as telework eligible - office centered.

Working Conditions

This is a field-oriented position with approximately 50% of time spent in the field. The field will include hiking across rugged terrain, hot and freezing conditions (30-105 degrees), experiencing biting insects, and some overnight camping. The ability to drive challenging unpaved roads with the use of state-owned 4-wheel drive vehicle is required. The ability to lift 50 lbs. and walk up to 9 miles daily is required. 50% of time will be spent indoors attending meetings, processing emails, phone calls, writing reports, and other office duties. This may include working at a computer for 8-10 hours. Overnight travel is required.

Eligibility Information

To be appointed you must satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • Transfer Eligibility – Must have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and associated links above).
  • Reinstatement Eligibility – Previously obtained permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and associated links above).
