Join the Indian Health Service as a Medical Support Assistant serving communities in the Navajo Area. The position provides patient registration and eligibility services, including processing demographic and insurance information for alternate resources, Purchase Referred Care, and private/commercial insurance within the Business Office.

A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021). EDUCATION: This position has an education requirement. If you are substituting education for experience; You are strongly encouraged to submit a copy of your transcripts or a list of your courses including titles, credit hours completed, and grades. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package. Official transcripts will be required from all selectees prior to receiving an official offer.

  • Interviews patients and/or family members to obtain and verify demographic, tribal eligibility, and insurance information and update health records.
  • Verifies patient eligibility and third-party coverage by contacting insurance providers and applicable federal and state agencies; identifies and refers potential eligibility cases as appropriate.
  • Enters and maintains patient information, assists with required forms, and obtains necessary documentation and signatures for alternate resources and Purchase Referred Care.
  • Oversees the patient admission, transfer, and discharge process by coordinating with physicians, nurses, patients, and other staff; completes required documentation, patient identification, admission and discharge forms, diagnoses, and coding.
  • Maintains and reconciles inpatient census and statistical reports, verifies patient movement and discharge information, researches discrepancies, and makes appropriate corrections.

All Grade levels may not be available at all locations. QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.


BASIC REQUIREMENT(S) :
GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates your ability to perform the work of this position at the GS-04 level.
OR
Two (2) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial, or technical school, junior college, college, or university.
OR
A combination of education and experience that, when combined, fully meet the minimum qualifications for the GS-04.


GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Assisted with patient registration, admission, discharge, and transfer duties by obtaining and verifying demographic, insurance, eligibility, and alternate resource information. Processed inpatient and day surgery admissions and discharges with guidance, completed required forms, verified admission types, obtained diagnoses, maintained patient census, and completed medical coding. Assisted with daily census by preparing forms, reviewing admissions and discharges, identifying observation stays, reconciling Admission and Discharge sheets, making corrections, and distributing reports to appropriate departments. Assisted with verifying coverage, Purchase Referred Care eligibility, billing discrepancies, and claim denials while maintaining accurate records in accordance with agency policies and procedures.

Four (4) years of education above the high school level.
OR
A combination of education and experience that, when combined, fully meet the minimum qualifications for the GS-05.

GS-06: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Performed patient registration, admission, discharge, and transfer duties by obtaining and verifying demographic, insurance, eligibility, and alternate resource information. Analyzed and corrected discrepancies in the Patient Registration System to ensure accurate demographic and eligibility data and prevent errors in patient records and statistical reporting. Coordinated eligibility and alternate resource determinations, including insurance coverage, billing, collections, and Purchase Referred Care requirements. Researched claim denials and billing issues, identified causes, and implemented corrective actions. Applied current policies and regulations affecting eligibility, billing, and collections while supporting the operational priorities of the Business Office, Patient Registration, and Admissions programs.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
