Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the incumbent will assist in the day-to-day management, operation and maintenance of aquatic and terrestrial habitats of the Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area (UBBWA). The Fish and Wildlife Technician will serve as a critical figure in completing safety checks of equipment, Fire Marshall inspections, pumps and other infrastructure.

Perform the semi-skilled and routine work involved in maintaining both aquatic and terrestrial habitats on the Wildlife Area, such tasks as: planting, or cultivating wildlife cover or forage plants; participate in the preparation and completion of controlled burns for habitat improvement; installing, cleaning and maintaining water control structures, ditches and pumps; spraying of herbicides for control of noxious weeds, performing routine maintenance and repair of buildings, vehicles and equipment; fencing and posting boundaries of wildlife areas; picking up garbage. Operate automobiles, trucks, tractors, pumps, sprayers and other types of mechanical equipment; also operate a variety of hand tools as needed.

Working Conditions

This position is expected to primarily work outdoors in all weather conditions. Position is required to work some nights, weekends and/or holidays for hunter check station operation. Occasional travel is required within the state of California; be able to deploy with short notice for extended periods (up to 7 days) that may include overnight stay. This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff on certain occasions.

Special Requirements

Incumbent is required and expected to work professionally with other Department staff on UBBWA and other facilities, as well as professionally represent the Department when working with the general public. Ability to work individually as well as part of a team.

Ability to swim at least 50 yards and to stay afloat at least five minutes; good physical condition; and ability to lift 40 pounds.


This position requires possession of a valid Class C Driver's License. Must maintain a clean driving record. The selected candidate may be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration.

Additional Qualifications: Ability to obtain a Qualified Applicators Certification, and a class A driver’s license is desirable.
