Description 

The fiscal and finance office at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) plays a vital role in supporting the agency's mission to protect the environment. This includes Budget Management and Allocation, Financial Reporting and Compliance, Revenue Collection and Grant Management Oversight, Procurement and Contract Management, Financial Planning and Analysis, Internal Support and Collaboration, and Key Fiscal Stakeholder Collaborations.  

 

The Fiscal and Finance Office are seeking an Internal Audit Unit Intern to join their team.  This internship provides hands-on experience in auditing, process improvement, and compliance by assisting with the development and standardization of audit documentation, reviewing procedures for adherence to state and federal procurement regulations, and identifying gaps in existing processes.

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Create and/or update audit documentation to assist in improving consistency and efficiency of the Audit Unit.
  • Review existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for compliance with State/Federal procurement policies and regulations.
  • Identify gaps in current procedural manuals.
  • Create/update standard operating procedures guidance documents.
  • Create standardized audit templates.
  • Document audit methodology.
  • Build onboarding guide for future interns.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Be studying accounting, finance, or public administration.

  • Show curiosity about how State organizations work.

  • Be comfortable working with data.

  • Reliable and detail oriented.

  • Basic accounting & business concepts.

  • Basic knowledge of internal auditing & controls.

  • Data and Excel skills.

  • Analytical thinking.

  • Strong communication skills and.

  • Basic professional and Technical skills.

 

 

 

This internship is unpaid and designed to support students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in the field. Interns may be eligible to earn academic credit through their college or university.

 

Position Information:

Contracted Student Intern:  Internal Audit Unit Intern

Start/End Date:  6/14/26 - 10/16/26

Weekly Hours:  30 hours

Number of Openings:  1 position
