Under the general supervision of the Automotive Program (AP) Supervisor I, the Automotive Program Representative (APR) performs a full range of laboratory, office, and field duties related to the regulation of the automotive repair industry. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, forensic vehicle documentation, acting as a technical resource person, and transporting undercover vehicles.

The APR collects, analyzes, and preserves evidence, prepares detailed forensic documentation reports that may lead to disciplinary actions, and provides testimony describing BAR findings in administrative, civil, and/or criminal proceedings. This position requires technical knowledge of automotive repair practices and the ability to interpret and apply complex laws, policies, and procedures to protect California consumers from substandard, fraudulent, and unsafe automotive repair practices and promote compliance within the automotive repair industry.

Assignments may vary in complexity and responsibility appropriate to the incumbent's skill and range level within the classification. As an incumbent gains experience, they are expected to perform duties with increasing independence, complexity, and higher consequence of error.

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Performs undercover vehicle documentation within a Forensic Documentation Laboratory which includes the inspection of automotive components and reports as to their condition. Determines that components and vehicle systems are functioning within manufacturer's specifications. Research technical specifications and testing procedures contained in various manufacturers' technical resources. Drives a transporter and delivers the undercover vehicle during the investigation process which includes loading and unloading vehicles. Performs post investigation inspection and documents the results of the inspection and prepares a report. Provides expert court testimony as an expert witness for Bureau Investigations. Maintains the undercover vehicle fleet.

Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors. The office area is in a controlled environment; the Lab area and outdoor work may expose the incumbent to climatic conditions, dust, fumes, and potentially hazardous materials and/or chemicals. Forensic vehicle documentation requires working in automotive bays or repair areas, where exposure to tools, machinery, and minor hazards is common. Driving may pose additional environmental exposure. The employee may occasionally be exposed to toxic materials. Must be able to travel throughout California. Occasional overnight travel may be required.
