Staff Accountant

Under the direction of the Controller, the Staff Accountant performs professional-level accounting duties for Denton County MHMR Center. This role ensures accurate financial record-keeping, strict compliance with GASB standards, and efficient tracking of public funds. Key focus areas include general ledger maintenance, fund accounting, grant tracking, bank reconciliations, and audit preparation. Works under moderate supervision, with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Education, Training, and Experience

·A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.

·Minimum of 2 years of professional accounting experience. Experience in governmental accounting is highly preferred.

·Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (vlookups and pivot tables) required.

Registration, Certification, Licensure, and Other Qualifications

• Must have and maintain a background and criminal history free from any disqualifying offenses as outlined by the Texas Administrative Code (TAC) and the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and automobile insurance.
• Individuals with an out-of-state driver's license must be able to obtain a driver's license in the state of Texas within thirty (30) days.
• Successful completion of all position-specific training within thirty (30) days of employment is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of financial administration, budget control, and fiscal accounting; of governmental accounting; of budget control methods, policies, and procedures; and of laws and regulations pertaining to fiscal operations.
• Skill in the use of office equipment, computers, and associated software applications.
• Ability to plan, organize, and direct accounting programs; to budget funds; to set up accounting systems; to interpret laws and regulations; to apply accounting theory; to communicate effectively; and to assign and/or supervise the work of others.
• Ability to display regular and reliable (in-person, if required) attendance.
• Understanding and practice of Trauma Informed Care principles.

Essential Duties

Fund Accounting & General Ledger:

·Maintain and balance general ledger accounts across various funds (General Fund, Asset Management Fund, Governmentwide Activities Fund).

·Prepare and post journal entries.

Reconciliations:

·Perform monthly bank, credit card, and balance sheet account reconciliations. Identify and resolve discrepancies promptly.

Grant & Project Tracking:.

·Monitor revenue and expenditures for federal, state, and local grants. Ensure compliance with grant terms and compile data for reimbursement requests.

Accounts Payable Support:

·Review coding and accuracy of accounts payable invoices.

Audit Support:

·Gather documentation and provide technical assistance to requests from external auditors during the annual financial audit.

Internal Controls:

·Adhere to established internal control procedures to safeguard public assets and ensure accurate financial documentation.
