Summary
The R&D Chemist is responsible for developing new products and improving existing products. The successful candidate will be able to work efficiently, independently and have exceptional documentation skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Utilizes chemicals, chemical compounds and chemical processes to create new products and technologies.
· Mixes different chemicals or polymers together to discover the results and chemical properties.
· Utilizes computerized databases that contain searchable lists of chemicals and chemical reactions.
· Researches to brainstorm ideas for new products.
· Performs laboratory tests such as pH, fluoride, viscosity, specific gravity, color, appearance, or any other lab tests to set specifications for product.
· Tests raw materials for specific quality attributes.
· Documents every project carefully per QSP 4.01, Design and Development Plan.
· Conducts Manufacturing Validations and authors protocols/results per QSP 4.01.06.
· Accurately records all variables, such as chemical type, amount, compound components, chemical temperature and test duration.
· Adheres to safety standards during laboratory testing, such as wearing protective clothing and taking additional precautions as needed.
· Writes production scale up batch records.
· Revises manufacturing batch records to enhance clarity of the manufacturing process and to update the documents to the current format.
· Writes/revises test records for finished products and raw materials to assure the quality of DTI’s products using established tests and specifications.
· Maintains a neat and orderly working environment.
· Manages weekly Product Development Committee meetings
· Prepares meeting minutes and takes accurate/complete notes
· Maintains files in the electronic Research & Development directory as well as project files
· Completes all training according to R&D Chemist job function in the Training Matrix (GF-221) in accordance with QSP 18.01.01.
· Performs testing only after training on the applicable procedures required by the test has been completed and properly documented.
· Performs other tasks, as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
Bachelors of Science in Chemistry required. 1-3 years of related experience preferred.
Language Skills
Able to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and depth perception.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working in a laboratory environment with hazardous chemicals and occasionally airborne particles. The employee will be required to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment including lab coats, particle respirators, chemical goggles/glasses, gloves, etc. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but in some cases can be high and require hearing protection.
Pay Range
The R&D Chemist is a non-exempt position that is paid hourly. Pay rate will be dependent on a number of factors including but not limited to knowledge, skills, and experience.
