What are the responsibilities and job description for the SLITTER SETUP OPERATOR position at DENNEN STEEL LLC?
SUMMARY
Sets up slitter heads and inspects for proper maintenance of slitter tools. Operates machine to slit continuous lengths of steel into coils of specified width
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Insures that the slitter head and tension rolls are set in place properly.
- Insures that the correct material is loaded on equipment.
- Crops back outer and inner laps of coil as required.
- Insures that the overarm is set properly.
- Spaces knives on machine shaft according to width specified for coils, and turns setscrew to secure blades in position.
- Mounts coil on machine supports and feeds material over tension bar, between feed rollers and rotary blades.
- Lock head of slit material around rewinder.
- Starts machine and observes flow of steel through machine to detect irregular cutting and winding. Constantly inspects material as it is being slit to insure quality.
- Move controls to stop, start, and regulate speed of machine and to align material with rotary blades.
- Disengages machine and removes slit coils.
- Operates slitter in a safe and efficient manner at all times.
- Tests and inspects product at defined intervals against designated acceptance criteria as defined in work instructions. Informs Quality Department of any defects and informs Production Scheduler if material does not meet customer specifications and requests a replacement.
- Uses calipers to check setup on material less than 18" and uses tape measure on cuts over 18" to insure proper setup.
- Cuts test samples for Rockwells and Olsons to check if material meets customer specifications.
- Complete quality assurance reports and other SPC data.
- Prepares nonconforming material reports on any material that does not meet customer requirements.
- Sets up slitter heads in a timely fashion to maintain the flow of production.
- Checks setup prior to running production to insure accuracy.
- Insures tooling is maintained and sent out on a timely basis for grinding or repair.
- Communicates with production manager regarding the need for replacement or purchase of additional equipment.
- Responsible for following work instructions for KanBan pull systems.
- Maintains safe work environment by following 5S standards.
- Understanding and working knowledge of all job-related Quality System Policies, Procedures, and Instructions.
IMPACT ON CUSTOMER QUALITY Failure to perform these activities will likely result in dissatisfaction to the internal/external customer.
- Follow established instructions and quality standards.
- Responsible for the safety of self and product from damage and/or injury.
- Responsible for constantly inspecting material to ensure quality and observing the flow of steel through machine.
- Examines work for quality conformance to policies and procedures and check setup prior to running production.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Minimum one-year steel experience preferred. Must understand principles and operating practices of a steel slitter.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Crane license preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must have both strong written and verbal skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Physical Demands:

Work Environment:
The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level is usually loud.
All proper PPE must be worn in all manufacturing areas and responsible for maintaining PPE standards.
