Job Title: Survey Crew Chief
Location: Southwest Florida (Collier, Lee, , Sarasota,) Department: Field Operations / Survey Reports To: Construction Project Manager Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to lead and manage field survey operations on road and bridge construction projects in Southwest Florida. The Survey Crew Chief will be responsible for overseeing a survey crew, coordinating with engineers and project managers for project layout, collecting accurate field data, and ensuring all survey work supports project schedules and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
· Lead daily field survey operations including construction staking, boundary, topographic, as-built, and control surveys.
· Supervise and train survey crew members to ensure work is performed safely and efficiently.
· Interpret construction plans, specifications, and control points to accurately set grades and alignments.
· Operate and maintain total stations, GPS equipment, data collectors, levels, and other survey tools.
· Ensure all survey data is collected, recorded, and delivered to project personnel in an accurate and timely manner.
· Communicate effectively with engineers, superintendents, and project managers regarding field conditions and layout needs.
· Verify existing control and establish new control points as needed for construction layout.
· Maintain daily field logs, reports, and sketches.
· Adhere to all safety protocols and ensure crew compliance with company safety standards.
· Troubleshoot equipment or layout issues in the field and recommend solutions.
· Support QA/QC efforts by providing accurate as-built and progress surveys throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree or technical training in surveying or civil engineering preferred.
· Minimum of 5 years of survey experience in civil, road, and/or bridge construction.
· Proficient in the use of robotic total stations, GPS (Trimble preferred), and digital data collectors.
· Familiarity with FDOT standards, specifications, and construction layout practices.
· Strong understanding of construction plans, CAD files, and project benchmarks.
· Ability to manage and mentor survey crew members effectively.
· Valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record.
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
· Willingness to travel to various job sites throughout Southwest Florida.
Preferred Skills:
· Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or Trimble Business Center is a plus.
· FDOT experience desirable.
Working Conditions:
· Field-based role with extensive outdoor work.
· Exposure to construction site conditions including heavy machinery, uneven terrain, and weather extremes.
· Occasional evening or weekend work may be required depending on project demands.
