What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coordinator of Special Education position at Demopolis City Schools?

Qualifications:
- Education Administration Certification
- Minimum of three (3) years experience as a special education teacher
- Provide consultative and collaborative services to teachers, parents, administrators and staff to support special education students.
- Creative problem solver who takes initiative.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Monitor Individual Education Plans and ensure State and Federal compliance in all special education and Section 504 areas.
- Ensure compliance with initial evaluations and re-evaluations with all students receiving special education services.
- Coordinate Individual Educational Plan case load distribution among special education teachers.
- Remain current on all state and federal laws pertaining to students with disabilities.
- Budget and manage IDEA, IDEA Pre-School Funds, and Gifted funds.
- Coordinate all gifted education services.
- Collaborate with key instructional leaders on implementing professional development that best fits the needs of the special education teachers.
- Research best practices and strategies for the implementation of Alabama’s College and Career Readiness Standards with and without accommodations and/or modifications.
- Coordinate with key instructional leaders to ensure proper accommodations and modifications are utilized during formative and summative assessments.
- Coordinate the Alabama Alternate Assessment and collaborate with the district testing coordinator with summative assessment matters in relation to students with disabilities.
- Work with school administrators to ensure efficient scheduling and protection of instructional time for students with special needs.
- Work with school administrators to ensure the most efficient use of certified and classified special education personnel.
- Lead monthly meetings with special education teachers (share updates from State Department, best practices, and professional development that meets the needs of the system).
- Assist with decision-making based on the four types of data (student assessment, student demographic, instructional programs and perception).
- Serve as a liaison between the school system and the State Department of Education in all special education and Section 504 related matters.
- Coordinate related services (Speech, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy) as well as third party testing for all students who are eligible for special education.
- Support school personnel with 504 related matters.
- On an annual basis, communicate with parents and stakeholders about Child Find and the process for referring students ages 3-21.
- All other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Education.
Terms of Employment:
Twelve-month position in accordance with the Board’s salary schedule.
Evaluation:
Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance to Demopolis City Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
