General Construction Worker

New Residential Construction

Position Summary

The General Construction Worker will assist with a variety of tasks associated with the construction and completion of a new residential building. This is a hands-on position requiring general construction knowledge, mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely with hand tools and power tools.

The worker will perform tasks independently when qualified and will otherwise work under the direction of the project manager, site supervisor, or applicable licensed trade professional.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the layout, assembly, and installation of light-gauge metal framing.
  • Assist with the installation, adjustment, and sealing of windows and exterior and interior doors.
  • Prepare surfaces and perform interior and exterior painting, priming, caulking, patching, and related finish work.
  • Install batt, rigid-board, spray-foam, and other insulation materials as directed.
  • Perform basic plumbing-related work, including drilling penetrations, installing supports, and assisting with the installation of approved piping and fixtures.
  • Assist with laying out, routing, securing, and protecting radiant-heating tubing.
  • Run and secure low-voltage, communications, data, control, and other permitted cables.
  • Install blocking, backing, clips, brackets, fasteners, hangers, and other construction components.
  • Measure, cut, drill, fasten, assemble, and install wood, metal, insulation, and finish materials.
  • Perform demolition, material handling, site protection, cleanup, and general labor as needed.
  • Load, unload, organize, and safely store tools, equipment, and construction materials.
  • Protect completed work and surrounding surfaces from damage.
  • Identify damaged materials, unsafe conditions, installation conflicts, and other job-site concerns and promptly report them to the supervisor.
  • Follow construction drawings, manufacturer instructions, and verbal directions.
  • Coordinate work with other employees, subcontractors, vendors, and inspectors.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work area.

Tools and Equipment

The worker must be able to safely and properly use common construction tools and equipment, including:

  • Corded and cordless power tools
  • Drills, impact drivers, and rotary hammers
  • Circular saws, reciprocating saws, miter saws, and oscillating tools
  • Metal-cutting saws and shears
  • Pneumatic and cordless nailers and staplers
  • Grinders and cutting tools
  • Levels, laser levels, tape measures, squares, and layout tools
  • Ladders, scaffolding, and work platforms
  • Basic plumbing and cable-installation tools
  • Hand tools commonly used in residential construction

The worker may only operate tools and equipment for which the worker has received appropriate instruction and is authorized to use.

Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience in residential or commercial construction is preferred.
  • General understanding of construction methods, materials, measurements, and job-site safety.
  • Ability to accurately use a tape measure and perform basic construction-related calculations.
  • Ability to follow drawings, written instructions, manufacturer requirements, and verbal directions.
  • Ability to safely operate common hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a construction team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Willingness to perform a variety of construction and general labor tasks.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and respectful attitude on the job site.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are preferred.

Physical Requirements

The position may require the worker to:

  • Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, push, and pull.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and elevated work areas.
  • Lift and carry construction materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently and heavier items with assistance or appropriate lifting equipment.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Work in areas that may contain dust, noise, vibration, odors, and other normal construction-site conditions.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, work boots, respirators, hard hats, and fall-protection equipment when applicable.

Safety Responsibilities

The worker is expected to:

  • Follow all project safety rules, OSHA requirements, and supervisor instructions.
  • Completed OSHA 10-Hours training
  • Use required personal protective equipment.
  • Inspect tools and equipment before use.
  • Use ladders, scaffolding, saws, nailers, and other equipment only in accordance with applicable safety procedures.
  • Keep guards and safety devices installed and operational.
  • Immediately report injuries, damaged equipment, unsafe conditions, and near-miss incidents.
  • Refrain from using alcohol, marijuana, illegal drugs, or any impairing substance while working or while present on the job site.

  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am - 4:30pm

The duties listed above are intended to describe the general nature of the position. The worker may be assigned other reasonable construction-related duties based on project needs, experience, training, and demonstrated ability.

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
