What are the responsibilities and job description for the R&D Power Electronics Engineer position at Delta Electronics Americas?
R&D Power Electronics Engineer
Role Summary
We are hiring a Power Electronics Engineer to support advanced development and platform-level R&D for high-power AC/DC power conversion systems spanning single-phase and three-phase solutions from several kW up to MW-class. This role is on-site in Fremont and includes frequent interaction with U.S. customers to understand application needs, support technical evaluations, and provide engineering input to R&D priorities. You will also support complex customer escalations that require deeper design-level troubleshooting beyond standard Field Application Engineering (FAE) processes.
Note: This role is focused on R&D / prototype / reference design work and does not own production ramp, manufacturing support, or sustaining engineering.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
Prototype & Advanced Development (no production ownership)
- Support development of high-power AC/DC prototypes and reference designs (single-phase and three-phase; kW to MW) through circuit evaluation, lab testing, and iterative improvements.
- Execute technical investigations / sub-system evaluations such as topology comparisons, efficiency improvements, protection methods, and thermal/EMI mitigation approaches.
- Perform hands-on bring-up, characterization, and debugging of power stages and system prototypes using lab equipment (scope, power analyzer, electronic load, etc.).
- Analyze test data, document findings, and implement design adjustments to meet performance targets.
Customer Engagement & Technical Support (U.S. customers)
- Participate in customer technical discussions to understand requirements and constraints; communicate trade-offs and recommend engineering approaches clearly.
- Support customer evaluations by preparing test results, answering design questions, and providing timely technical follow-up.
- Work with internal teams to translate customer feedback into actionable engineering tasks or technical experiments.
Escalation Support (beyond FAE)
- Support complex or ambiguous escalations—cases where typical FAE troubleshooting is insufficient—by driving structured debug plans, hypothesis testing, and root-cause analysis.
- Coordinate with global R&D partners to converge on containment actions and technical resolution options.
Global Collaboration
- Collaborate with global R&D centers to share results, reuse proven design approaches, and contribute to common design guidelines/best practices.
- Produce clear engineering artifacts: test plans, experiment reports, design notes, and concise recommendations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Power Conversion/Drives, or a related field is preferred; candidates with a Master degree and 3 years of relevant experience will also be considered.
- Strong fundamentals in power electronics with proven hands-on lab capability.
- Experience designing, testing, or debugging high-power converters (AC/DC and/or DC/DC and/or inverter/rectifier experience acceptable).
- Comfortable with engaging customers in technical discussions and communicating clearly in a professional setting.
- Self-motivated, dependable, collaborative; able to work effectively across time zones and functions.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
- Experience in renewable energy / high-power conversion (e.g., solar inverters, PCS, EV charging, UPS, industrial power) that is transferable to MW-class systems.
- Familiarity with high-power semiconductors (IGBT/MOSFET/SiC/GaN as applicable), gate drives, sensing, and protection schemes.
- Practical understanding of EMI/EMC fundamentals and mitigation in high-power switching systems.
- Experience with simulation/modeling tools (SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS) is a plus.
- DSP/MCU digital control is a plus but not required.
Work Environment
- On-site only in Fremont; frequent lab work and in-person collaboration.
- Regular customer interaction in the U.S.; occasional travel may be required.
