Delta Dental of Wisconsin is currently seeking a Director, Actuarial Services. This leader will participate in and guide all actuarial functions—pricing, reserving, forecasting, predictive modeling—and ensure our team’s expertise supports our strategic goals. They’ll also collaborate internally and externally with NorthWinds Technology Solutions (NorthWinds), Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA), and other Delta Dental Member Companies (DDMC), and key partners to advance our actuarial capabilities.
This is a full-time hybrid position (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in office and Wednesday and Friday from home) located at our headquarters in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and implements company goals and objectives in support of Delta Dental of Wisconsin’s mission and strategy.
- Accountable for efficient work between departments and business units in alignment with Delta Dental of Wisconsin’s values.
- Directs and ensures compliance with policies and procedures.
- Identify and work with DDWI’s technology resources (internal and / or external) to implement applications and systems required to meet department objectives.
- Develops human resource recommendations and conducts performance management so that the Actuarial team can successfully execute on its goals and objectives.
- Develops department budget, authorizes and analyzes spending, and is accountable for successful results.
- Identify, develop, and direct key performance metrics for managing and measuring department success.
- Identify, develop, and communicate key messages to management, staff and clients related to DDWI’s actuarial work.
- Ensure department meetings are planned, scheduled, and facilitated as needed to accomplish DDWI’s actuarial work and to support its overall strategy.
- Responsible for ensuring collaboration and positive working relationships between the Actuarial team and other external and internal stakeholders so that DDWI can advance and accomplish its strategic priorities. This includes but is not limited to NorthWinds, other DDMCs for which we provide actuarial services, DDPA, and other DDWI business areas.
- Responsible to ensure the Actuarial team is effectively collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders to develop new lines of business and/or improve existing business.
- Oversee DDWI’s core actuarial function, including ensuring sound actuarial principles are applied in the calculation of claim reserves, pricing, experience studies, etc. for DDWI and other DDMCs for which we provide actuarial services.
- Oversee the Actuarial Services consulting work and ensure the actuarial team is building relationships with the DDMCs and subsidiaries for which we provide actuarial services.
- Ensure the Actuarial team is appropriately represented in the Idea to Delivery process and requirements signoff.
- Collaborate with leaders throughout the organization to understand and support the strategic initiatives of the organization.
- Stay abreast of market and book of business trends (i.e., sales and persistency results and targets, loss ratios, expense
- ratios, claims costs, etc.) and assist in determining strategic direction with such information. This includes identifying and analyzing the internal and external factors which affect assumptions used in forecasting, trending, rate models, etc.
- Keep informed about market conditions, competitive information and political factors that may impact the goals and strategies of the organization. Communicate key developments to appropriate stakeholders and use information appropriately when performing analysis, collaborating on internal and external projects, and participating in strategic conversations.
- Oversee setting and monitoring the premium and claim budget and long-range forecasts for dental and vision products.
- Serve as the appointed actuary for any legal entity, internal or external, when formally appointed by that legal entity’s Board of Directors.
