CASTING CALL: MOTORMOUTH MAYBELLE
Hairspray - Delray Beach Playhouse MainStage
Delray Beach Playhouse is seeking a powerhouse performer to bring Motormouth Maybelle to life in our upcoming MainStage production of Hairspray.
THE ROLE:
Motormouth Maybelle is the heart and moral center of Hairspray. A record store owner, radio DJ, and unshakeable force for justice who leads the fight for equality with warmth, wit, and steel. This is one of the most vocally demanding and emotionally powerful roles in modern musical theater, culminating in the show-stopping anthem “I Know Where I’ve Been.”
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
• A strong belt with excellent gospel/R&B vocal control and stamina
• Commanding stage presence and natural authority
• Ability to bring both fierce conviction and deep tenderness to the role
• Prior musical theater experience preferred; solo experience a strong plus
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
• Prepare 16-32 bars of an R&B, gospel, or soul-style song (please, no pop radio edits)
• An accompanist will be provided; no a cappella
• Sides may be provided for a cold read at the audition
• Bring sheet music in the correct key
REHEARSAL DATES: October 19th, 2026 - November 19th, 2026 on Monday - Friday evenings.
SHOW DATES: November 20th, 2026 - December 13th, 2026 on Friday - Sunday.
