General Summary:
Supervises and coordinates activities of train crew engaged in switching railroad cars within railroad yard, industrial plant, or similar location to facilitate loading or unloading of cars, making/breaking up trains and is expected to be able to perform these assigned duties as needed.
General Duties:
Supervises and coordinates the activities of train crews
Facilitates employee meetings and programs to emphasize safety and identify safety risks
Grows relationships and is an effective partner through strong daily communication with Mechanical, Engineering and foreign line carriers
Receives oral or written instructions from manager or customers indicating which cars are to be switched
Notifies train crew members of orders, which cars are to be moved to specified locations of yard, using radio, telephone, verbal or hand signals and gives instructions to throw track switches and to couple and uncouple cars
Manage cars online through various reports and systems
Must ensure daily train lists are accurate as generated by the customer service department, and accurate as completed by the train crews within their territory
Must ensure all reporting is done accurately and timely, including daily crew work sheets and weekly operational reporting
Execution of efficiency and operating tests according to company practices, including downloading and reviewing locomotive event recorder data
Clearly understand car hire and demurrage
Manages crew starts, crew size, and overtime in a cost-effective manner
Initiate and provide an accurate, complete, and timely investigation of all accidents and incidents, including causes, remedial action, and recommended solutions
Understand the quantitative factors contributing to the major costs on the railroad, and understand impact on financial performance
Adjust locomotive requirements to consists based on HP and trailing tons daily, with a goal to minimize locomotive fuel and maximize locomotive utilization
Understand all outstanding track conditions within the territory, including slow orders, and their impact on efficiency
Knowledge of and skills in applying basic federal railroad regulations, guidelines and rules
Other duties may be assigned, as requested or required
