Position Purpose
The position of Track Mechanic is responsible to perform the unskilled and semi-skilled labor necessary for the maintenance and construction of PATCO’s track structure, shops, stations and other related facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform necessary work as directed to maintain the track components such as rails, switch points, stock rails, frogs, ties, ballast and other aspects pertaining to the track structure.
- This position will assist other occupations in the Track & Facilities Department and in other departments in the performance of their duties by performing general labor tasks as directed.
- This position will operate various pieces of small and heavy equipment as assigned based on the skill and training of incumbent.
- Performs snow shoveling/pushing function for all facilities of PATCO as necessary.
- Must be able to work a variety of schedules, including evening, night and/or weekend work and holidays as needed.
- Assists in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training, recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity, and using all required personal protective equipment.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Education and/or Experience
Preferred:
- Three (3) years prior experience as a laborer in heavy construction and/or railroad track construction with a working knowledge of the tools used in the performance of the work.
- Experience with rail transit property, class 1 railroad, or railroad construction contractor.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit (5%). The employee may be required to stand, bend and walk (80%) lift (10%) and climb (5%). The employee must occasionally lift, hold, and carry objects up to 140 pounds. The employee must have normal day and night time vision, corrected or uncorrected, must have normal hearing, corrected or uncorrected. The employee must be able to perform all position functions and must also be able to physically operate all job related equipment.
Individuals in this position require a full range of physical motion and the ability to lift heavy loads, i.e., track components, heavy machinery weighing one hundred forty (140) pounds in a single person lift or two hundred eighty (280) pounds in a two person lift. Must be able to climb ladders, including but not limited to, rung and step ladders. This position also requires incumbent to be able to walk, stoop, bend, crawl, ascend/descend stairs, steps, and ladders, etc., withstand heights of over 150 feet, climb up and down transit car(s) with a step height of as much as three (3) feet, and lift leg(s) a height of twenty-four (24) inches to clear third rail by stepping over same.

This position requires the incumbent to work both indoors (primarily tunnels) and outdoors in all types of lighting and weather conditions including but not limited to, heat, sun, rain, snow and ice. This position requires the incumbent to work on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Protective clothing, eye protection, hearing protection (when appropriate and whereas, the wearing of such protection does not pose a safety risk to the employee during the performance of the essential job functions), dust masks and respirators are provided to protect against the elements, such as, chemical splashing, airborne debris, toxic fumes, and sustained loud or high pitch noises that may be encountered.
