Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced CNC programmer who is equally comfortable on mills and lathes. This is not an entry-level position. You will own programs from print to first article, working in difficult materials on tight-tolerance, low-to-medium volume parts, and you will be on the floor proving out your own work alongside setup techs and machinists.
Duties
- Write, edit, prove out, and optimize CNC programs for multi-axis mills and CNC lathes, including live-tooling and mill/turn work.
- Develop toolpaths in CAM from solid models and 2D prints, then post, simulate, and verify before the part ever sees the spindle.
- Select tooling, workholding, speeds and feeds appropriate to titanium, stainless, tool steel, Inconel and other difficult-to-machine alloys.
- Build and maintain setup sheets, tool lists, operation sequences and program documentation so jobs run the same way the second time as the first.
- Support first article inspection and work with QA to resolve dimensional issues, correcting programs and offsets as needed.
- Troubleshoot machining problems on the floor: chatter, tool life, finish, deflection, thermal growth, and cycle time.
- Drive cycle time and cost out of existing programs without giving up quality or tool life.
- Review new part designs with engineering and flag manufacturability concerns before quoting or release.
- Maintain programming libraries, revision control, and standard practices for the programming group.
- Train and support machinists and setup personnel on new jobs and revised processes..
Skills
- 5 years of hands-on CNC programming experience in a precision machining environment, with real depth in both milling and turning. Candidates strong in only one discipline will not be a fit.
- Proficiency with Mastercam required.
- Ability to write and edit G-code and M-code at the control, and to work comfortably with Fanuc, Haas, or Okuma controls.
- Solid grasp of GD&T and the ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and 3D models.
- Working knowledge of tooling, fixturing, machining strategy and material behavior in exotic alloys.
- Comfort with precision inspection equipment and CMM reports.
- Machining background on the floor, not just at a desk. Setup and operating experience is expected.
- Ability to hold tolerances in the tenths and to explain how you get there.
- U.S. person status as defined by ITAR, or the ability to qualify, given the nature of some of our work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Multi-axis experience (4-axis & 5-axis to 8/9-axis mill/turn).
- Swiss-type lathe programming. (Star/Citizen)
- Experience machining titanium or other aerospace-grade materials.
- Familiarity with AS9100, ISO 9001, or IATF 16949 quality systems.
- Grinding, EDM, or coating process exposure.
- SolidWorks proficiency for fixture design.
- Motorsports or aerospace industry background.
