To become a substitute, applicants must either have a credential or a permit authorizing eligibility to teach in a classroom such as a preliminary or clear California teaching credential or an University Internship Credential (CL-402A). Applicants that do not hold a credential may qualify for an Emergency 30-day Substitute Teaching Permit (CL-505p). In accordance with Commission on Teacher Credentialling “CTC” regulations the following restrictions apply: “The Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit authorizes the holder to serve as a day-to-day substitute teacher in any classroom, including preschool, kindergarten, and grades 1-12 inclusive, or in classes organized primarily for adults. The holder may serve as a substitute for no more than 30 days for any one teacher during the school year, except in a special education classroom, where the holder may serve for no more than 20 days for any one teacher during the school year. This permit is valid for one year and is renewable. In order to employ individuals on an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit, the employing agency must keep a completed Statement of Need form (CL-505a) on file at their office for the duration of the school year.” A bachelor’s degree (must provide official transcripts) is required to be eligible for a Emergency 30-day Substitute Teaching Permit. The District Del Norte County Unified School District serves more than 4,000 K-12 students in ten regular schools, one comprehensive high school, one continuation high school, and several alternative education programs. The Del Norte community is further enhanced by numerous music programs, a community concert association, amateur theater groups, and an active organization for cultural awareness. Extended educational opportunities are available through the community college adjacent to Del Norte High School and the Del Norte University Center. Fishing, agriculture, lumber, and tourism are among the area’s main industries. Because of the large expanse of public lands and multiple public services many residents are public employees. In comparison to other areas in California, Del Norte County residents enjoy short commutes, clean air, clean water, and ample living space.
