What are the responsibilities and job description for the Production Manager - 1st Shift position at DeKALB Molded Plastics?
DeKALB Molded Plastics is seeking a production leader who can run a molding production on 1st shift directly with oversight of 2nd and 3rd shift production. Be a leader who can solve problems and improve how the operation performs. You will lead approximately 15–20 employees in our structural foam molding operation on 1st shift and take ownership of 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift’s safety, quality, production results, and employee development.
This role calls for more than keeping the schedule moving. We need someone who can recognize developing problems, work through the causes of downtime and scrap, and lead 5S and lean improvements that produce lasting results.
What you’ll do
- Set shift priorities, assign people and resources, and hold the team accountable for safe, quality production.
- Maintain/support production schedule and ensure customer PO date expectations are met.
- Maintain oversight and leadership of 2nd and 3rd shift supervisors with development of team in mind.
- Monitor output, downtime, scrap, staffing, and schedule performance. Act when results begin to fall short.
- Troubleshoot equipment, tooling, material, and process issues with process technicians, maintenance, quality, and materials. Identify root causes and follow corrective actions through resolution.
- Apply best practice molding processes between 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift operations.
- Weekly/monthly reporting of KPI’s on molding performance against structured KPI goals.
- Use production data and time on the floor to identify recurring losses and opportunities to improve workflow, changeovers, labor use, and equipment performance.
- Lead all CI activities on 1st shift with standardized transfer to 2nd and 3rd shifts. Sustain 5S practices, including clear standards, organized work areas, employee involvement, and regular follow-up.
- Apply lean manufacturing methods to reduce waste and improve safety, quality, and throughput.
- Coach employees, develop team capability through training and cross-training, and address performance concerns promptly.
- Coordinate production priorities and communicate decisions, open issues, and results clearly to management and the next shift.
- Support press start-ups and production troubleshooting when needed and within your training.
What we’re looking for
- Proven experience leading a manufacturing production team and being accountable for its results.
- Six Sigma green belt or related equivalent experience.
- Strong mechanical or process aptitude and a systematic approach to troubleshooting.
- Hands-on experience leading or sustaining 5S and lean manufacturing improvements. You should be able to explain what you changed and how you measured the result.
- Experience using production measures such as downtime, scrap, throughput, labor efficiency, and on-time delivery to guide decisions.
- Ability to make sound decisions during a busy shift, work across departments, and follow problems through to resolution.
- Experience in plastics molding or another equipment-intensive manufacturing process is strongly preferred.
- A degree in business, engineering, or a related field is valued; substantial relevant manufacturing leadership experience will also be considered.
