THE VILLAGE OF DEFOREST
The Village of DeForest is in northern Dane County along interstate 39-90-94 and serves as a northern gateway to Madison, the state capital of Wisconsin. The village currently has approximately 12,500 residents and is in one of the fastest growing areas in Wisconsin. The village is known for its beautiful parks, top rated trail system, great schools, and small-town atmosphere while being a short drive to the many amenities of Madison.
As of hire, the Police Department will employ 26 full-time employees, including an authorized staff of 23 full time officers.
The department operates with a Chief of Police, Captain of Police, Lieutenant of Police, 5 Sergeants, 2 rotating Detectives, a rotating School Resource
Officer, 12 Patrol Officers, an Executive Assistant, and 2 Administrative Assistants. The department responded to over 11,000 calls for service in 2025. The 2025 Annual Report can be found on the Village of DeForest website at www.deforestwi.gov.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The DeForest Police Department is seeking lateral transfer police officer applicants to work in a fast-growing community with opportunities for growth within the department. We are looking for motivated, hard-working, and dedicated professionals who believe in community policing and enjoy working in a team environment. The department has specialized positions including K9 Handler, Instructor, Drone Pilot, Recruiter, Special Response Team, School Resource Officer, and Detective.
Schedule
Are you looking for a department that has every other weekend off? Our patrol officers work 10-hour shifts (4 on 2 off, 2 on 3 off, 2 on 1 off) for a total of 1,976 working hours a year. This schedule allows for every other weekend off (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). Shifts are picked yearly by seniority. Shift work does include nights and weekends.
POLICE OFFICER
Reason for Announcement: Fill vacant position and establish eligibility list
Salary & Benefits: The starting full-time hourly wage is $35.25 to $45.17 dependent on experience, qualifications, and education under the 2025-2026 contract. Additional educational incentives for 90 college credits and a BA/BS degree available upon hire, including a starting wage of $45.17 for those with a BA/BS degree and 15 years of experience. Experienced officers are eligible to join the department with pay and vacation time consistent with their experience. Employees are provided the following benefits: Wisconsin retirement fund; health/dental insurance; life insurance; long-term disability; sick leave; thirteen paid holidays; double pay on holidays worked, compensatory time; funeral leave; a start-up clothing allowance followed by a yearly allowance; optional FSA plan, deferred compensation, AFLAC, vision, 80 to 240 vacation hours during first year dependent on experience.
QUALIFICATIONS
U.S. Citizen; 18 years of age; driver’s license; good driving record; good physical condition; high school diploma; a minimum of 60 college credits, eligibility for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification; possess a skill set acquired through previous employment that displays maturity, experience, and a work ethic that is consistent with employment as a Law Enforcement Officer. These employment fields may include but are not limited to social work, educators, and healthcare professionals, ability to possess a firearm; no felony convictions; no domestic abuse convictions; good verbal and written communication skills; able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays; ability to perform essential functions of this position; ability to use all standard law enforcement equipment.
