Plant, transplant, cultivate, harvest, grade and pack blueberries and blackberries by hand or machine. Pre-harvest activities for berries may include staking, tying, planting, transplanting, pruning, trimming, maintaining crops, and removing ground covers. Workers will plant, cultivate, hand-harvest, and load harvested berries according to quality standards. Remove weeds from around the plants and from the row middles. Walk through an assigned row while bending and reaching to pick ripe fruit by hand without bruising or damaging the fruit or bush. Pick fully ripe fruit; discard any deformed, decayed or undersized berries according to supervisor's instructions. Carefully remove any undesirable fruit from the plant that would later cause fungi to attack the plant. Perform general field labor including mowing, cutting, weeding fields, ditching, shoveling, hoeing, hauling, ground preparation, and other manual tasks. Prepare and/or clear land for planting by removing trash, rocks, debris, or material that may interfere with planting or harvesting activities. Perform post-harvest activities. Workers will be trimming and pruning trees, pulling weeds, raking, cleaning areas around the farms and buildings, pulling plastic, cane removal, trellis repair and tie-up, and assisting with farm building/field/fence maintenance and repairs. Participate in irrigation activities. Install, set up, move, maintain, and operate irrigation systems, irrigation pipes, water lines, and equipment. Dig and maintain ditches. Use hand tools including, but not limited to, hoes, shovels, shears, clippers, loppers, and saws. Lift, carry, and load/unload products or supplies. Apply fertilizers, plant growth chemicals, conditioners, and other plant-related treatments at the correct times depending on plant type, growth, climate, and crop conditions. Grade and pack product according to supervisor's instructions in the field or packing house. Grade products by size, weight, color, condition, shape, appearance, and feel. Discard inferior or defective products or foreign matter. Place acceptable products in specified containers. Assemble cartons, crates, and containers using hand tools. Mark grades on containers. Weigh products and record weight and/or grade. Differentiate between colors, textures, and other attributes of product to distinguish varieties and identify defects. Stack boxes onto pallets, transport vehicles, or trailers. Count, load, and unload products and/or materials. Palletize and stack boxes and containers. Move product to storage or loading areas to prepare for shipping. Keep accurate material and product records. Receive inbound loads at dock and perform quality control on inbound and outbound loads. Follow quality control standards and production procedures. Handle products carefully to prevent damage. Work on mechanical harvesters, moving and filling lugs and stacking onto pallets. Work on production lines to pack products by hand or with mechanized equipment including, but not limited to, bin feeders, box machines, labeling machines, and regular and high stacking forklifts. Clean and sanitize workstations and equipment, including washing lugs. Clean and maintain containers, materials, supplies, and work areas. Operate, repair, clean, and maintain farm equipment and vehicles. Assist with regular maintenance on equipment. Workers must operate all equipment properly and in a manner that protects operators, others, the employer’s products, and property.
