Position Summary
The Reactor Operator (RO) is a licensed/certified control room operator responsible for the direct manipulation of reactor controls and monitoring of plant systems to ensure safe and efficient reactor operations. Working under the direction of the Senior Reactor Operator, the RO monitors reactor parameters, operates plant equipment, and responds to changing plant conditions. This position offers an excellent career path toward Senior Reactor Operator certification and long-term growth in nuclear operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate reactor controls from the main control room under the direction of the Senior Reactor Operator, including reactivity manipulation and power level adjustments
- Monitor reactor parameters, instrumentation, and plant systems to ensure operations remain within Technical Specification limits
- Maintain active NRC Reactor Operator license or certification and fulfill all license requirements including continuing training, medical examinations, and fitness-for-duty obligations
- Execute plant startups, shutdowns, and power changes in accordance with approved operating procedures
- Respond promptly and appropriately to alarms, abnormal conditions, and emergency situations
- Perform system alignments, valve lineups, and equipment manipulations as directed
- Maintain accurate and complete operator logs, records, and documentation
- Conduct plant rounds and inspections to verify equipment status and identify potential issues
- Participate in shift turnovers, pre-job briefs, and operational meetings
- Support maintenance activities by preparing equipment for work and restoring systems to service
- Participate in emergency response drills, training exercises, and NRC examinations
- Contribute to a strong safety culture by identifying and reporting safety concerns and near-miss events
- Provide input to operational and training programs to improve site and company operations
Required Qualifications
- Active NRC Reactor Operator license, or ability to obtain RO license within 18 months of hire through company-sponsored training program
- Associate degree in Nuclear Technology, Engineering Technology, or related technical field; OR equivalent military nuclear training (Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program); OR 3 years of power plant operations experience
- Strong foundation in reactor theory, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid flow principles
- Understanding of nuclear plant systems, components, and their interrelationships
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, P&IDs, and operating procedures
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures precisely
- Excellent communication skills for control room coordination and shift turnover
- Ability to pass NRC medical examination and meet fitness-for-duty requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain unescorted access authorization
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Preferred Qualifications
- Current or previous NRC Reactor Operator license at a commercial nuclear power plant and/or U.S. Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program training and qualification (ELT, ET, EM, or MM rating)
- Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field
- Experience with digital control systems and modern reactor instrumentation
- Previous auxiliary operator or non-licensed operator experience at a nuclear facility
- Experience with plant startup, commissioning, or new unit operations
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Ability to work in industrial environments including exposure to heat, noise, and confined spaces
- Must be able to climb ladders, navigate stairs, and access equipment throughout the plant
- Capability to wear personal protective equipment including respiratory protection when required
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to monitor control room instrumentation and respond to alarms
- Ability to work extended hours during outages, emergencies, or as operational needs require
