Job Summary:
The Assistant Manager of the Lumber Yard supports the Lumber Yard Branch Manager in overseeing daily operations, ensuring efficient workflow, exceptional customer service, and a safe working environment. This role involves supervising staff, managing inventory, coordinating deliveries, and maintaining the yard’s operational standards. The Assistant Manager will act as a leader in the manager’s absence, ensuring seamless operations and promoting a positive team culture.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operational Support: Assist in managing daily lumber yard activities, including receiving, storing, and distributing lumber and related materials. Ensure the yard is organized, clean, and compliant with safety regulations.
- Team Supervision: Lead, train, and motivate a team of yard workers, forklift operators, and customer service staff. Schedule shifts, delegate tasks, and monitor performance to meet operational goals.
- Customer Service: Provide excellent service to customers, addressing inquiries, assisting with product selection, and resolving issues promptly. Ensure customer orders are accurate and delivered on time.
- Inventory Management: Monitor stock levels, conduct regular inventory counts, and coordinate with suppliers to ensure adequate supply. Report discrepancies and maintain accurate records.
- Safety Compliance: Enforce safety protocols, including proper use of equipment and personal protective equipment. Conduct safety training and inspections to minimize risks.
- Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and safe operation of yard equipment, scheduling repairs as needed to minimize downtime.
- Delivery Coordination: Assist in scheduling and tracking deliveries, ensuring timely and accurate fulfillment of customer orders.
- Administrative Duties: Support the manager with tasks such as preparing reports, tracking sales, and managing budgets. Handle basic HR functions, including timekeeping and employee records.
- Leadership Role: Act as the manager in their absence, making decisions to maintain operations and resolve issues effectively.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, or a related field is a plus.
- Experience: 2 years of experience in a lumber yard, building materials supply, or similar industry, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
- Skills:
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Knowledge of lumber and building materials.
- Proficiency in inventory management systems and basic computer skills.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to operate forklifts and other yard equipment.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and stand/walk for extended periods.
Work Environment:
- Primarily outdoors in a lumber yard setting, with exposure to dust, noise, and varying weather conditions.
- Requires frequent physical activity, including lifting, carrying, and moving heavy materials.
- Standard work hours with occasional overtime based on business needs.
