- Under the general direction of the Superintendent, this position requires one to: annually prepare a recommended plan for the school system’s transportation services, implement and coordinate the system’s approved transportation service plan, perform bus driving duties, supervise and evaluate departmental employees and perform other duties as assigned.
Administers and coordinates all transportation services
Assists in developing procedures relating to transportation services
Develops and maintains a formal system for the evaluation of school bus routes
Provides route sequencing information to maximize efficient and cost-effective travel paths according to established student time-on-bus criteria
Trains bus drivers to continuously enhance bus management skills and job-related effectiveness
Makes analyses and recommendations regarding the location of bus stops and initiates route changes as required
Confers with school principals and other officials when adapting transportation services
Investigates accidents and reports them to the proper authorities without delay
Acts as contact person for complaints regarding departmental services
Responds to inquiries or concerns in a timely manner
Secures substitute transportation personnel
Attends/participates in bus inspections
Maintains records and prepares reports to provide information as to the effectiveness of operations
Manages recruitment and makes recommendations for the replacement of bus drivers and develops equipment specifications
Schedules a program of preventive maintenance for school system buses
Maintains surveillance of bus routes for hazards and road conditions
Develops and implements policies and programs for both immediate and long-range departmental functions
Assists in interviewing, selecting and orienting applicants
Supervises assigned personnel, conducts annual performance evaluations, and make recommendations for appropriate employment actions
Supports schools and provides transportation services for extracurricular activities and/or programs
Schedules the transportation for handicapped students
Assists in the promotion of good safety practices and procedures
Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local laws
All applicable Alabama Code, Motor Vehicle and Education Code requirements and regulations
Special provisions relating to school transportation
Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance of buses
Safe driving, training, and preventive maintenance practices
School system geography
- Plan maximum utilization of transportation department personnel and equipment
- Accurately estimate needed materials and equipment
- Successfully supervise employees assigned to diverse departmental functions
- Coordinate schedules and assignments
- Maintain accurate and current records and make appropriate projections and reports
- Plan and implement an efficient and effective transportation system
- Understand, carry out and give oral/written directions
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work
- Anticipate issues and design process/procedures to address them

12 Month Contract
Master’s Degree from a four-year college or university with Administrative Certification
Successful experience in a supervisory position
Knowledge of school bus traffic laws, safety, mechanics, and routing
A valid commercial driver’s license with CDL/bus driver endorsement is REQUIRED
Alabama Driver’s License
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret textbooks, electronic media, general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, and the general public.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Administrative Certificate with appropriate endorsement
Commercial Driver’s License with bus driver endorsement
First Aid and CPR Certification
Alabama Driver’s License
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and infrequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the functions of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to risk of: electrical shock, work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Outside the state of Alabama, we must have a letter (on school district letterhead) or public school district form showing beginning and ending dates stating your years of service and position held while employed
Credit is awarded for public school experience only, private, parochial, or similar experience will not be accepted
Experience must be full time at least 50%-100% of the academic year
Administrative credit will be awarded only for experience in the same position, i.e., principal for principal position as stated in the salary schedule
Transfer Sick Leave: If you have sick leave from another state school system or from another state of Alabama agency, you must have a Sick Leave Transfer form sent from your previous employer to our Human Resources department
- The Decatur City Board of Education awards a salary based on the highest degree earned, even if the degree is outside education. The degree must be verified on an official transcript & recognized by the Alabama State Department of Education.
