What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Supervisor position at Decades Construction Group, Inc.?
Role
The Field Supervisor is responsible for leading, managing, and holding accountable Decades' field workforce, including Lead Carpenters and Carpenter Assistants, to ensure construction work is completed safely, efficiently, productively, and to company quality standards.
This role focuses on developing employees, managing labor resources, establishing consistent field practices, and ensuring team accountability. Rather than performing the responsibilities of direct reports, the Field Supervisor provides clear expectations, coaching, resources, and oversight to ensure employees succeed in their roles.
Working closely with Project Managers, who retain overall project management and scheduling responsibility, the Field Supervisor translates project plans into field execution, coordinates manpower and subcontractor activities, and monitors progress across active projects. Through regular site visits and proactive problem-solving, this role ensures field teams are prepared, productive, and consistently meeting project expectations.
Success is measured through safe and organized jobsites, quality workmanship, labor productivity, schedule reliability, employee development, and effective communication.
Responsibilities
Field Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, manage, and hold accountable Lead Carpenters and Carpenter Assistants against job responsibilities, KPIs, and standards for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, professionalism, communication, timekeeping, cost coding, equipment, and client interactions.
- Conduct regular performance observations, check-ins, coaching, recognition, and reviews; document findings and deficiencies, establish development goals, and address performance issues consistently.
- Support hiring, onboarding, promotions, compensation recommendations, corrective actions, and terminations in coordination with the Director of Project Operations.
- Develop employee skills, identify training needs, reinforce Lead Carpenter mentoring responsibilities, and build succession opportunities across field positions.
Field Execution & Project Readiness
- Maintain visibility into active and upcoming projects, including scope, schedules, milestones, staffing, production requirements, and potential risks.
- Coordinate with Project Managers to establish realistic field deadlines, labor plans, and expectations; monitor progress through site visits and implement recovery plans or escalate risks when necessary.
- Ensure field readiness before mobilization by reviewing plans, specifications, logistics, site conditions, safety requirements, staffing, tools, equipment, materials, and access.
- Complete required takeoffs, measurements, material lists, and existing-condition documentation while ensuring Lead Carpenters understand project expectations.
- Document and communicate project delays, distinguishing Decades-controlled issues from external factors such as owners, design, subcontractors, and material availability.
Workforce Planning & Labor Productivity
- Manage field personnel assignments and labor allocation across projects based on workload, skills, priorities, and development opportunities, minimizing downtime and unnecessary reassignment.
- Forecast manpower needs, identify capacity gaps, and recommend staffing adjustments or hiring.
- Monitor labor performance against estimated hours and production targets, investigate variances, and implement corrective actions without compromising safety or quality.
- Ensure accurate daily timekeeping, project and cost-code allocation, and Friday timesheet compliance, addressing errors and coordinating corrections with Project Managers and administrative staff.
Safety & Quality Control
- Enforce OSHA regulations and company safety standards through regular inspections, hazard identification, PPE compliance, toolbox talks, training verification, and corrective action.
- Stop unsafe work when necessary, ensure incidents and near misses are reported, coordinate with the Director of Fire & Safety, and hold field leadership accountable for safe working conditions.
- Inspect self-performed work for compliance with drawings, specifications, building codes, manufacturer requirements, and company standards; identify deficiencies, correct recurring issues, and minimize rework.
- Ensure Lead Carpenters verify existing conditions, maintain quality throughout construction, protect completed work, and address punch-list items proactively.
Field Audits & Operational Accountability
- Conduct regular jobsite visits to evaluate safety, quality, progress, productivity, staffing, employee performance, cleanliness, materials, equipment, client interactions, and punch-list status.
- Document significant observations, communicate findings to Project Managers and field personnel, and ensure required corrective actions are completed.
Materials, Equipment & Trade Coordination
- Oversee proper use, storage, maintenance, and accountability for company tools, vehicles, trailers, equipment, and materials, addressing damage, loss, waste, and replacement needs.
- Coordinate subcontractor activities, trade sequencing, site access, and workflow with Decades' self-performed work; resolve field conflicts and escalate scope, contractual, or financial issues to Project Managers.
- Maintain clear communication with Project Managers regarding field conditions, progress, manpower, risks, and upcoming needs while ensuring field commitments remain achievable and authorized.
Problem Solving & Project Closeout
- Proactively identify constructability issues, sequencing conflicts, resource constraints, and recurring problems; investigate root causes and recommend solutions considering safety, quality, cost, productivity, schedule, and client expectations.
- Establish clear escalation expectations and encourage field personnel to raise concerns early.
- Coordinate completion of self-performed work, pre-punch inspections, punch-list corrections, and final site cleanup to support timely project closeout and turnover.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify and implement improvements to field procedures, construction methods, sequencing, tools, equipment, and prefabrication opportunities to improve productivity and consistency.
- Provide feedback on estimated versus actual labor, material usage, procurement challenges, constructability, and training needs to improve future planning and estimating.
- Participate in project reviews, document lessons learned, and collaborate with the Director of Project Operations to establish repeatable field standards and best practices.
