Job Summary
In home support person is part of a team supporting vibrant young men and women with Intellectual Disabilities, who are living in their own homes. You will play a crucial role in supporting these young individuals, ensuring that they are safe, well-cared for and active participants in their life as members of an independent living household and as members of the Milford community. You will also have the full support of a house manager and their parents who live locally.
As an in-home support person, you will work one-one, and alongside other caregivers, depending on the shifts you take and the time of day. We have several shifts that need to be covered, including overnights and weekends. The ideal candidate will have experience with behavioral strategies, such as ABA, special needs adults or children (or willing to learn), be mature, reliable, active, compassionate, creative, a self-starter/proactive, a good communicator, interested in supporting the independence of others and fun.
You must be willing to support daily living skills and there will be lots of opportunities for activities both inside and outside.
Responsibilities
- Provide support for young individuals with special needs primarily in their home, along with other places in the community, such as activities, grocery store trips, social gatherings.
- Assist individuals with daily living activities, including preparing meals, personal care, getting ready for day programs.
- Collaborate with house manager, other in-home support staff, families, and community resources to support individualized care and goals for the household.
- Maintain accurate documentation of activities, behaviors, & progress reports.
- ensure individuals safety
- transportation in your own car if needed (mileage reimbursement provided)
Requirements
- Experience with autism or special needs settings is preferred.
- Complete training for all aspects of the position (including legally mandated training by DDS/implemented by GTI, learning how to use an app for tracking hours and activities, & participating in any team meetings or trainings)
- Clean driving record and insurance
- transportation to activities or into the community when needed
- Assist with activities of daily living
- Work with manager for scheduling, keeping track of individual activities
- Help individuals maintain the house (clean up, laundry, etc)
- Help with meals and clean up
- Supervise leisure activities
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals, families, and professionals.
- Previous experience in supported home settings or with autistic individuals is advantageous.
- Compassionate attitude towards individuals with disabilities and a commitment to advocating for their needs.
- Must be able to commit to work on a regular schedule although there will be opportunities to pick up extra hours or switch with other in home-support.
