Plating Technician (1+ Yrs Experience)

General Description:

The Plating Technician is responsible for the setup and maintenance of plating baths, as well as all related equipment, including fixtures, hand tools, and measuring instruments. They ensure parts are processed according to technical specifications and safety protocols, producing high-quality plated components.

Essential Functions:

• Plating Process Management: Monitor parts as they progress through various plating baths, including hard chrome plating lines. This involves careful observation of the plating process to ensure proper adherence and thickness.
• Plating Line Maintenance: Maintain the plating line by performing regular tank additions, monitoring chemical levels, and ensuring overall tank and area cleanliness. This includes managing chemical storage and monitoring expiration dates to maintain bath integrity.
• Part Preparation and Processing: Prepare and process parts for plating, which includes tasks such as cleaning, masking, and racking. Follow precise instructions to ensure only specified surfaces are plated and that parts are properly secured for the process.
• Technical Interpretation: Follow traveler instructions and interpret technical drawings to identify surfaces that need to be masked and plated, ensuring the final product meets all design requirements. Perform simple metal fabrication tasks as needed to prepare parts or fixtures.
• Quality and Measurement: Use precision instruments such as gauges and micrometers to inspect parts before, during, and after plating. Verify that plating thickness and other quality metrics comply with all specifications.
• Safety and Compliance: Adhere strictly to all established safety rules and regulations. This is critical due to the presence of hazardous chemicals, including chromic acid and Chromium VI.
• Documentation: Accurately complete all paperwork associated with the job traveler, including logging data into the Envision system, to maintain a clear record of the production process.

• Mathematical Aptitude: Basic math skills for reading measurements, calculating chemical additions, and interpreting data.

Technical Training Required:

• Work Order & Data Management: Training on reading and filling out the Job Traveler and performing data entry into the Envision system.
• Blueprint Interpretation: In-depth training on using technical drawings to identify surfaces to be masked and plated.
• Safety & Equipment Handling: Comprehensive training on the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the safe use of lifting equipment like forklifts and hoists.
• Precision Measurement: Instruction on the proper use of precise measurement devices, including micrometers, dial calipers, and dial indicators.
• Chemical Handling and Safety: Specialized training on handling and working with plating chemicals, including procedures for spill response and safe disposal.
• Plating Process & Troubleshooting: Hands-on training in plating techniques, bath maintenance, and troubleshooting common plating defects.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a medium-to-heavy manufacturing environment with frequent exposure to noise, temperatures, dust, odors, and chemical fumes. Chemical exposure includes chromic acid, Chromium VI, and other caustic and corrosive chemicals.

• The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 20/20 vision with or without corrective lenses.
• Must be able to safely utilize and wear PPE, such as a dust mask, steel-toe footwear, and safety glasses.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours per week.

Travel:

No travel is expected for this position.

Required Education and Experience:

High school graduate.

One year of plating experience is preferred.

One year of pre- and post-cleaning surface finishing experience is also preferred.
