Overview
The Analyst is responsible for performing complex valuation analyses of intangible assets, equity interests, and other financial instruments for privately held and publicly traded businesses. This role supports a variety of engagements, including financial reporting, tax planning and regulatory compliance, estate and gift tax planning, and strategic corporate transactions, such as mergers and acquisitions, IPOs, reverse mergers, and other public offerings for publicly traded companies, venture capital and private equity portfolio companies.
The Analyst leads valuation engagements, manages project timelines, performs advanced financial modeling, conducts management interviews, and communicates findings to clients and senior colleagues. The ideal candidate possesses strong analytical capabilities, extensive valuation experience, and excellent communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
Valuation Analysis
- Conduct business enterprise valuations using income, market, and asset-based approaches.
- Perform valuations of equity interests, intangible assets, stock-based compensation, and complex securities.
- Develop and review discounted cash flow (DCF), guideline public company, precedent transaction, and option pricing models.
- Analyze historical and projected financial statements, industry trends, and economic conditions.
- Research market data, transactions, and comparable companies.
Client Service and Project Management
- Design the scope of work for engagements.
- Assume responsibility for quality control and accuracy of timely client deliverables.
- Manage multiple valuation engagements simultaneously while meeting deadlines and budget expectations.
- Build, maintain and enhance client relationships.
- Interface directly with clients to gather financial and operational information.
- Present valuation methodologies, assumptions, and conclusions to clients, auditors, attorneys, and other stakeholders.
- Assist clients with transaction-related analyses and strategic decision-making.
- Participate in business development opportunities.
Team Leadership
- Review analytical work and provide constructive feedback.
- Assist managers and directors in client relationship management and business development activities.
- Participate in team meetings and process improvement initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
- Degree in Finance, Accounting or Economics
- 3-5 years of experience in business valuation in a valuation practice of an audit, tax or independent valuation firm
- Significant experience with valuations of business entities, common stock/409A valuations, gift and estate valuations, intangible assets, purchase price allocations, analyzing goodwill and long-lived asset impairment, financial analysis and related research
- A minimum of 1 year of experience managing engagements, including related budgets, billing, invoicing, engagement leadership, and developing project work plans
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, solid analytical and financial modeling skills, the ability to work well independently within a small team in a flexible, fast-paced work environment
- Demonstrated ability to oversee multiple valuation engagements and manage client relationships
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA or Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Mathematical Finance, Financial Engineering or related field
- Professional designations such as: ASA (Accredited Senior Appraiser), ABV (Accredited in Business Valuation), CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
- Experience with valuation software and financial databases such as Capital IQ, FactSet, or Bloomberg
- Experience with AI tools specific to Business Valuation use cases
- Public accounting or consulting firm experience
Location
Newburyport, MA or approved remote location. Hybrid (Typical structure is 80-90% remote, 10-20% On-site/meetings)
Physical and Mental Job Qualifications
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk and hear. Work also requires occasionally traveling to, visiting and/or being on-site with clients and related activities as needed.
