JOB SUMMARY

The DC Public Library system comprises 26 locations, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, which is the downtown central library. The DC Public Library is a vibrant center of activity for residents and visitors in the nation’s capital. The library provides environments that invite reading, learning, and community discussion and equips people to learn all their lives, to embrace diversity, and to build a thriving city. As part of the DC Public Library’s Teen Council program, the Teen Aide is assigned to the central library, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, or one of the neighborhood libraries and carries out a range of duties to support the operations of the Library. The incumbent receives instruction through workshops and on-the-job experience designed to increase competence in the workforce. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists customers with basic questions or problems in operating library equipment, including library public access computers, printers, copiers, etc.
  • Participates in special projects and/or focus group discussions in order to boost library services to teens.
  • Write blog or social media posts about issues affecting teens.
  • Works with staff to design and run programs for teens, including one (1) Capstone project primarily designed, lead, and evaluated by the aide.
  • Assists staff with community outreach and promotes the library to their peers.
  • Assists in preparation for library programs by moving, arranging and setting up library furniture and equipment.
  • Attend all mandatory trainings and workshops.
  • Creates book displays to encourage reading.
  • Keeps give-away materials in order and monitors bulletin boards and other postings.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be a resident of the District of Columbia
  • Must be between the age of 14 -19 years old at time of appointment (age subject to verification)
  • Maintain a 2.5 or higher-grade point average (GPA) if enrolled in school or possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of Equivalency (GED)
  • Able to commit to working through August 2026 at a DC Public Library
  • Applicants under the age of 18 will be required to obtain a work permit if selected
  • Ability to deal courteously with library customers and staff.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as copiers and fax machines.


RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

A person applying for a position in the Career Service, Educational Service, Management Supervisory Service, an attorney position in the Legal Service (series 905) other than the Senior Executive Attorney Service (SEAS), or an attorney position in the Excepted Service (series 950) who is a bona fide District resident AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.


GENERAL SUITABILITY SCREENING

This position is subject to general suitability screening; verification of employment history, reference checks and degree/license, as applicable. The appointee to the position may be offered employment contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory general suitability screening.


ENHANCED SUITABILITY SCREENING

The position for which the individual is applying has been identified and designated as requiring enhanced suitability screening; If tentatively selected for the position, a criminal background check, traffic record check, consumer credit check, and mandatory drug and alcohol test will be conducted (as appropriate); and the appointee to the position may be offered employment contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory enhanced suitability screening.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT

Work is normally performed in a typical inside environment, which does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements.

Type of Appointment: Temporary WAE Appointment | January 2026 through August 2026

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is not covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

Promotion Potential – None

Appointed Salary - The selected incumbent will be appointed at the appropriate salary rate of a CS 02 based on the DPM's guidelines.
