JOB SUMMARY

This position is located in the Collections Division at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) System, which serves the entire Washington metropolitan area. The Library System is comprised of the Central Library, 24 neighborhood branch libraries and employs over 400 employees. The Library is making a number of service improvements and embarking on a major transformation into a 21st century library system. The new state-of-the-art system will have innovative programs, advanced technology, expanded literacy services, modern and welcoming facilities, and robust collections, as well as serve as a national model for libraries around the nation.

The Library Technician processes all new materials acquired by the library; provides the library with properly prepared materials that are ready for public and staff use, and assists in collection maintenance activities.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Unpacks and receives new materials. Compares receipt of item to packing slips.

  • Sorts materials by format, age level, language or related categories. Forwards verified packing slips to Acquisitions Unit.

  • Processes books and media materials for collections by affixing stamps, labels, security devices, barcodes and protective covers. Repackages media in cases.

  • Prints call number labels and affixes to items.

  • Mends print and audiovisual materials by relabeling, taping, photocopying missing pages and cleaning covers.

  • Sorts all newly processed materials for distribution and verifies that all materials are shelf- ready.

  • Sorts and shelves materials to prepare new collections and for assigned projects

  • Processes withdrawn materials, deleting items in the automated system

  • Workflows Cataloging Module items for liquidation. Receives computer training on a continuing basis as new and/or amended procedures are developed.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent educational certification (GED).

  • Minimum of 1 year of direct, in-person customer service experience.

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, including the ability to create and edit documents, spreadsheets, and professional correspondence using Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Able to provide technology and operational support involving the use of computers, automated library systems, digital applications, and equipment necessary to ensure efficient branch operations and high‑quality customer service.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

The work is performed in an office setting.


DISTRICT REFERENCE CHECK

All applicants who are current or former District of Columbia Government employees will be subject to a background examination prior to the issuance of a conditional offer of employment. The position for which the individual is applying has been identified and designated as protection sensitive suitability screening; If tentatively selected for the position, a criminal background check, traffic record check, consumer credit check, and mandatory drug and alcohol test will be conducted (as appropriate); and the appointee to the position may be offered employment contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory enhanced suitability screening.

Appointed Salary: The selected incumbent will be appointed at the appropriate salary rate of CS-06

Budgeted Salary – This position is budgeted for the minimum salary of $46,437 to the maximum salary of $51,291.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

Applicants claiming residency preference will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.

If the position you are applying for is in the Career, Management Supervisory, or Educational Service at an annual salary of one hundred fifty thousand dollars ($150,000) or more, you must establish residency in the District of Columbia within one hundred eighty (180) days of the effective date of the appointment and continue to maintain residency within the District of Columbia throughout the duration of the appointment.


EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS

Selectee will be eligible for health and life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave and will be covered under the District of Columbia government's retirement plan. However, if selectee was previously employed in the District of Columbia government under an appointment for which he/she was eligible for Civil Service Retirement (CSR), contributions to CSR will resume upon re-employment.
