Job Summary

This position is in the District of Columbia Department of Employment Services (DOES) Office of Public Affairs. The Department of Employment Services (DOES) mission is to connect District residents, job seekers, and employers to opportunities and resources that empower fair, safe, effective working communities.

The incumbent serves as a Writer-Editor responsible for the overall coordination of the editorial and preparation of public affairs documents to include agency reports, flyers, brochures & pamphlets, media & press releases, video captions, and more. Incumbent serves as an expert in reviewing and copy editing for final production agency advertisements, social media, brochures, reports, and more.

Duties And Responsibilities

Researches and prepares the Office of Public Affairs internal & external materials, such as policies and procedures; reports, messaging documents, and special assignments assigned by Chief of External Affairs & Supervisory Public Affairs Specialist, in accordance with the Director’s Suite needs in support of DOES mission and programs. Manages the development and presentation of complex information by converting it to understandable terms for different levels and interests of audiences. The incumbent has overall responsibility for editorial review, readability analysis, and copy-editing of agency internal documents and print and online materials, including agency and program reports, flyers, brochures & pamphlets, media & press releases, video captions, and more.

Analyzes and develops new ways to improve the accuracy, adequacy, timeliness, and validity of print and online materials. Provides advice and assistance during the writing stage, and edits the text for clarity and accuracy. Provides technical writing/editing expertise, performs research, and explains and interprets complex functions in support of several projects within the agency. Examines the length and tone and makes the necessary adjustments. Reviews and edits documents submitted for publication and makes recommendations for rejection of documents. Analyzes, creates, edits and proofreads for accuracy, format, and clarity.

Qualifications And Education

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression

Tour of Duty: Monday-Friday 8:30 am- 5:00 pm or Varies

Operating Status: In-Person reporting, flexible and limited telework options available upon position eligibility and operational needs.

Duration of Appointment: Career Service – Term NTE 13-Months

Pay Plan, Series and Grade: CS-1082-11

Salary: $65,285-$84,1467; Based on qualifications and funding

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is not covered by a Collective Bargaining Unit.

Position Designation: This position has been designated as Security sensitive therefore the incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability and as such, incumbents of this position shall be subject to criminal background checks, background investigations, and mandatory drug and alcohol testing, as applicable.

Residency Requirement: Applicants claiming “Residency Preference” will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
