Job Summary
The Sales Engineer/Cost Estimator is responsible for analyzing customer requirements and developing accurate manufacturing methods, cost estimates, and process plans for new and existing business opportunities. This individual works closely with customers, outside sales, engineering, and operations teams to develop attainable production rates, material selections, and pricing structures that support safe, profitable, and efficient production.
Through the use of strong analytical skills and manufacturing knowledge, this role serves as a critical bridge between customer requirements and manufacturing execution by developing detailed process instructions, estimating production costs, and supporting successful job launches. S/he also assists with customer relationship activities, technical discussions, and lead generation initiatives as assigned.
Cost Analysis & Quoting
· Perform cost estimation activities for new and existing business opportunities utilizing Company standard cost analysis systems and procedures.
· Analyze customer specifications, drawings, samples, military specifications (Mil-Specs), and performance requirements to determine manufacturing feasibility and cost structure.
· Develop accurate labor standards utilizing time study, work measurement, and work estimation techniques.
· Create detailed, step-by-step manufacturing processes outlining labor tasks, production flow, cycle times, and estimated production rates.
· Evaluate tooling, jigs, fixtures, setup requirements, and related production expenses associated with each project.
· Select and recommend appropriate materials for each application in collaboration with the Process Development Manager.
· Maintain organized engineering and estimating files documenting all cost assumptions, calculations, and process methodologies.
Process & Production Support
· Work closely with Operations and Production personnel to ensure manufacturing methods and cost assumptions are accurate, practical, and clearly communicated.
· Provide concise and accurate production methods and working instructions to manufacturing teams.
· Assist with new job startup activities and production implementation for awarded business.
· Support Manufacturing Engineering with ideas for the design and implementation of tooling, fixtures, and equipment as required.
· Provide drawings and supporting documentation associated with quoted projects.
Customer & Sales Support
· Participate in customer meetings, technical discussions, and plant visits to evaluate customer applications and communicate Heritage Packaging capabilities.
· Host customer representatives at the Heritage Packaging facility as needed.
· Gather, organize, and document customer inquiry details and technical requirements.
· Participate in sales meetings and provide project status updates and technical summaries.
· Support outside sales activities and internal business development efforts as required.
· As assigned, extract contacts from ZoomInfo and distribute Heritage Packagin-approved solicitations either individually or through bulk email systems.
Continuous Improvement
· Identify opportunities to improve estimating accuracy, response time, efficiency, and profitability.
· Maintain awareness of industry standards, trends, materials, equipment, and converting technologies related to flexible packaging manufacturing.
· Continuously expand technical knowledge through self-study, trade publications, professional organizations, and training opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Science, Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field preferred; OR minimum of five (5) years of converting operation experience involving process development within the flexible packaging industry.
· Strong knowledge of flexible packaging materials, converting processes, Mil-Specs, and performance specifications.
· Demonstrated experience with manufacturing cost analysis, quoting, labor estimating, and process development.
· Strong understanding of production equipment, tooling, fixtures, and manufacturing workflows.
· Excellent organizational and analytical skills with strong attention to detail.
· Strong computer proficiency, including estimating systems, spreadsheets, ERP/MRP systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
· Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
· Effective communication and customer interaction skills.
· Ability to match equipment, materials, and labor resources to customer applications in a manner that supports safe, timely, and profitable production.

Physical Requirements
· Ability to sit, stand, walk, and use standard office equipment for extended periods.

Work Environment
This position operates in both office and manufacturing environments. Exposure to production equipment, noise, and industrial materials may occur while supporting manufacturing operations and customer visits.
Pay: $55,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
