SUMMARY: The Shop Helper assists the transportation department with basic
cleaning, organization, and minor maintenance duties in the bus shop. This entry-
level position provides support to mechanics and shop staff while helping
maintain a safe and clean working environment.

AGE REQUIREMENTS: Must be 16 years of age or older.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist mechanics with basic
shop tasks and daily operations. Clean buses, shop areas and equipment. Assist with
seat cover installment, changing/rotating tires, basic oil changes, filling of fluids, and
small mechanical jobs on school buses and smaller white fleet.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS:
- Criminal background check required for hire.
- Valid driver’s license.
TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
- Dependable with good attendance
- Willingness to learn basic maintenance and shop procedures
- Basic automotive knowledge preferred
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Basic knowledge of hand tools/ air tools is helpful but not required
- Ability to follow directions and work as a team or independently
- Ability to learn minor preventative maintenance on school buses and white fleet.
- Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all
people, including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds. - Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules,
practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report any unsafe
working conditions to the appropriate administrator.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of lifting and moving equipment in shop
- May operate district vehicles if knowledgeable and qualified.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS & DIRECTION/GUIDANCE: Reports to: Shop Supervisor and Transportation Director
