Job Summary: The Army JROTC Instructor at DECA serves as a teacher, mentor, and advocate for cadets’ academic, leadership, and character development. The instructor implements the U.S. Army Cadet Command-approved JROTC curriculum, oversees the cadet corps and its activities, and works tirelessly to create optimal learning and leadership experiences for students. Teachers report to the School Director and work in partnership with the U.S. Army Cadet Command.

Qualifications:

• Certified (or certifiable) as an Army JROTC Instructor through U.S. Army Cadet Command;
• Retired from active duty, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard with an honorable discharge and meeting all Cadet Command requirements for service, rank, and education;
• Valid Ohio teaching license/certificate or ability to obtain appropriate licensure as required;
• Effective interpersonal skills with children and adults;
• A broad range of interests and experience, with a passion for learning and youth development;
• Solid, basic knowledge in core content areas and leadership development;
• Prior relevant teaching, coaching, or youth leadership experience preferred;
• Sound classroom and corps management skills;
• Ability to improvise and problem solve;
• Experience with technology integration in the teaching and learning process;
• Effective in an interdisciplinary, teamed environment;
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative, provide leadership, define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;

Duties/Essential Functions:

• Serve as a positive role model for students, exemplifying the Army Values (Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage);
• Demonstrate a positive, supportive, enthusiastic, and encouraging attitude with all students;
• Implement, by instruction and action, DECA’s mission, core values, and the mission of Army JROTC (“To motivate young people to be better citizens”);
• Advocate for, and on behalf of, students and families;
• Celebrate student and cadet accomplishments;
• Develop meaningful, appropriate relationships with each student and his/her parent/guardian;
• Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes, including, within reason, outside of the traditional prescribed times and day, when necessary;
• Attend faculty meetings and other staff development and planning sessions as determined by the principal and school staff;
• Maintain accurate, complete, and factual records on each student as required by school law;
• Teach the Army JROTC curriculum using a variety of instructional strategies and learning activities aligned to Cadet Command standards and Ohio learning standards as appropriate;
• Plan a program of instruction that is both challenging and that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of each child;
• Establish clear learning and leadership objectives for cadets and provide supplemental activities that support student growth;
• Facilitate cadet leadership development through the Army JROTC chain of command and staff positions;
• Support cadets in setting and monitoring academic, behavioral, and postsecondary goals
• Maintain accountability for all U.S. Government–issued uniforms, equipment, and instructional materials;
• Ensure compliance with all U.S. Army Cadet Command regulations, inspections, and reporting requirements;
• Coordinate and supervise JROTC extracurricular activities such as color guard, drill team, raider/fitness team, academic team, service-learning projects, and ceremonial events;
• Facilitate student learning and service outside the school building via a variety of field experiences, community service, and leadership activities;
• Assist in identifying, establishing, and monitoring leadership and learning opportunities for students;
• Hold students accountable for their academic progress, leadership responsibilities, and uniform/appearance standards;
• Report each student’s progress, both educationally and socially, through regularly scheduled reports, communication with parents, and cadet conferences;
• Attend faculty meetings and other staff development and planning sessions as determined by the principal and school staff;
• Maintain accurate, complete, and factual records on each student as required by school law and by Army JROTC (e.g., JUMS data, rosters, inventories)
• Assess and facilitate the strengths and needs of the whole learner: physically, socially and emotionally, and intellectually/academically;
• Mediate student conflicts to the best of your ability;
• Work with the school team on academic and social/behavioral intervention strategies for student;
• Periodically transport students complying with traffic ordinances and school transportation policy;
• Perform other duties as assigned by the principal; and
• Strive to continually improve professional competence

Physical demands:

• While performing the duties of his/her job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and/or hear
• The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception

• The noise level in this work environment is quiet to loud depending on the activity and location
