SAFETY SECURITY OFFICER

The Safety and Security Officer at the Dayton Art Institute is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for visitors, staff, and artwork. This role includes monitoring the facility, conducting patrols, responding to incidents, and serving as a visible and approachable presence throughout the museum.

This position is best suited for individuals who are dependable, observant, and comfortable working in a structured environment. While emergency situations may occur, much of the role involves maintaining awareness, following established procedures and interacting respectfully with a wide range of visitors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct regular patrols of the museum galleries, grounds, and parking areas to support safety and security
• Monitor security cameras and alarm systems to detect and prevent unauthorized access and security concerns.
• Maintain a visible, approachable presence to support visitor safety and deter disruptions.
• Assist visitors with directions, information, and general support in a professional and respectful manner.
• Respond to incidents, including medical situations, alarms, or safety concerns, following established procedures.
• Use sound judgment to de-escalate situations and mitigate risk while maintaining a calm demeanor.
• Enforce museum policies and procedures to protect individuals, property, and artwork.
• Complete required reports and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE

• Experience in customer service, hospitality, public facing roles or other positions involving regular interaction with the public strongly preferred.
• Previous security, safety, or emergency response experience is a plus, but not required.
• Ability to follow procedures, remain attentive, and work independently.
• Ability to interact respectfully and effectively with a wide range of people and remain calm and professional in public-facing situations.
• Reliable, consistent, and able to maintain focus during both active and quiet periods.
• Good judgment and the ability to respond appropriately to changing situations or unexpected events.
• CPR and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

This role is primarily based in a museum environment, with regular movement throughout offices, galleries, storage areas, and other public facing spaces. The position may require sitting or standing for extended periods and communicating effectively in person and through electronic communication. Occasional lifting of materials up to approximately 20 lbs may be required. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, or special events depending on museum programming and operational needs.
