What are the responsibilities and job description for the Art Advisor position at Dawson Cole Fine Art?
About Us
Dawson Cole Fine Art represents contemporary sculptor Richard MacDonald, along with a select roster of established and mid-career painters and mixed-media artists. For more than 30 years, our galleries have cultivated strong relationships with collectors who value emotional connection, craftsmanship, and legacy in fine art acquisition.
Role Overview
We are seeking an Art Advisor to join our Palm Desert gallery team. This role is ideal for someone who is energized by client engagement, enjoys learning and speaking about art, and thrives in a hospitality-driven environment. You will greet guests, learn their interests, share the stories and artistic philosophy behind our artworks, and guide collectors in acquiring works that speak to them.
This position is central to maintaining consistent gallery presence, particularly during the early evening hours when El Paseo sees its strongest walk-in traffic.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome guests and create a warm, refined, and attentive gallery experience.
- Listen to visitors, understand their tastes, and introduce artworks aligned with their preferences.
- Share the narrative of movement, human form, emotional arc, gesture, and atelier craftsmanship.
- Maintain active relationships with collectors through follow-up communication (email, phone, handwritten notes).
- Enter new leads, conversations, and collector notes into Salesforce (training provided).
- Open and close the gallery; maintain cleanliness, lighting, artwork arrangement, and presentation standards.
- Assist in installations, packing, inventory coordination, and scheduling deliveries when needed.
- Support evening gallery hours and occasional special events.
Qualifications
- A sincere interest in art and design; prior gallery experience is a plus but not required.
- Warm, confident communication style; good listener.
- Comfortable engaging in conversation with guests in a relaxed, friendly, non-pushy way.
- Well organized, reliable, and able to maintain consistency in the gallery’s presentation.
- Tech-comfortable (email, iPhone, CRM notes — we will train on Salesforce).
- Must be able to lift artwork boxes / pedestals occasionally (reasonable accommodation considered).
Compensation
- Base salary commensurate with experience.
- Sales performance commission bonus opportunity based on individual and gallery results.
- Paid training in MacDonald studio philosophy, collector engagement, and PRECIOUS value framework.
