For over seven decades investor-owned utilities, municipalities, cooperatives, and others have entrusted their electrical construction and maintenance needs to Davis H. Elliot Company, Inc. (Elliot).
Elliot is a full-service electrical contractor specializing in overhead and underground distribution, transmission, substations, lighting, traffic signaling, utility locating and industrial/commercial services.
The GIS Technician is responsible for conducting field surveys, staking utility infrastructure, and preparing documentation to support the design, installation, and maintenance of overhead and underground utility systems. This role ensures construction crews have accurate, safe, and compliant staking plans for building or upgrading utility services.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform on-site field surveys to collect measurements, identify utility locations, and determine optimal routes for new or existing utility lines (overhead or underground).
- Interpret engineering drawings, construction plans, and client specifications to create precise staking layouts.
- Place stakes, markers, and flags to indicate the proposed location of poles, lines, equipment, and easements.
- Use GPS equipment, field tablets, and mapping software to record site information accurately.
- Prepare staking sheets, sketches, field notes, and digital documentation for engineering and construction teams.
- Ensure all staking activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including NESC standards.
- Communicate with landowners, contractors, and project managers to clarify design requirements and address field conditions.
- Identify potential conflicts or hazards such as existing utilities, property boundaries, or environmental restrictions.
- Recommend adjustments to designs when field conditions differ from original plans.
- Maintain accurate records of all work performed and support project closeout documentation.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in utility staking, surveying, construction, or a related technical field.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and maps.
- Proficiency with GPS, GIS, and staking or mapping software (e.g., Trimble, AutoCAD, ESRI).
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Preferred:
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, Surveying, or related field.
- Knowledge of electric, telecommunications, or broadband utility systems.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, and local permitting processes.
- Experience with LiDAR data or digital mapping systems.
