Project Manager – Bridge Construction (MDOT)

Davis Construction, Inc. – Lansing, Michigan

Davis Construction, Inc. is seeking a Project Manager with strong experience in heavy highway and/or bridge construction, preferably on Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects. This role is accountable for managing several active projects simultaneously—controlling scope, schedule, labor, subcontractors, field operations, and financial performance.

The Project Manager serves as the primary liaison with Owners and inspectors and is responsible for delivering each project safely, profitably, and in full compliance with contract requirements.

This is not an entry-level coordination role. The ideal candidate understands how MDOT projects operate in the field—interpreting specifications, navigating change conditions, maintaining accurate quantities, and protecting the company’s position while supporting field production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple project contracts simultaneously, ensuring scope, schedule, and budget alignment with MDOT standards, Owner expectations, and company goals.
  • Develop and manage detailed project schedules, pay estimates, labor forecasts, staffing plans, and equipment/resource allocations.
  • Coordinate daily with Superintendents to align manpower and equipment with production goals.
  • Review plans, specifications, proposals, and contract documents to ensure efficient execution and compliance.
  • Identify, document, and pursue additional pay items or scope modifications when contract conditions change.
  • Work directly with Owners and inspectors to resolve specification conflicts, design inconsistencies, and scheduling issues.
  • Lead project start-up planning and maintain clear, proactive communication with field and office personnel.
  • Support project safety through routine site visits and coordination with field leadership.
  • Maintain precise control over quantities, costs, revenue projections, and financial performance metrics.
  • Prepare and deliver progress reports, cost and revenue forecasts, and schedule updates to leadership.
  • Oversee all contract closeout activities, including final documentation, retainage collection, claim resolution, and lessons-learned reviews.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for landowners, businesses, utilities, and other external stakeholders affected by the work.
  • Ensure accurate, timely construction reports and project documentation to protect company interests.
  • Participate in bid reviews and bid closeout to validate constructability and project feasibility.
  • Collaborate internally on process improvements, operational changes, technology upgrades, and strategic initiatives.

What You Bring

  • Proven experience in heavy highway or bridge construction, preferably on MDOT projects involving complex staging, structural work, and schedule-sensitive operations.
  • Ability to interpret MDOT specifications, special provisions, quantities, pay items, and contract language and apply that knowledge to field and business decisions.
  • Practical understanding of how manpower, equipment, sequencing, and traffic control influence production, cost, and schedule.
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to engage with Owners, inspectors, subcontractors, utilities, and field supervisors professionally and assertively.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously without losing track of details, documentation, or cost impacts.
  • Solid judgment and problem-solving skills, including knowing when to escalate issues, negotiate, or adjust plans to protect the project.
  • Competence with project documentation, including schedules, cost tracking, quantity tracking, change conditions, and progress reporting.
  • A mindset geared toward continuous improvement, openness to new systems and technology, and a willingness to strengthen internal processes as the company grows.
  • A strong commitment to safety, accuracy, accountability, and delivering work that reflects company standards.

Schedule

  • Full-time, Monday–Friday
  • Early mornings and after-hours support for urgent issues
  • Occasional night work as required
  • On-call availability for emergency situations

Salary Range

Compensation is based on the candidate’s demonstrated experience with MDOT construction, project scheduling, cost control, contract administration, and the level of responsibility they have successfully managed on past projects.
