Job Title: Museum Assistant
Location: Davenport House Museum, Savannah, GA
Position Overview:
The Davenport House Museum is seeking an enthusiastic and adaptable Museum Assistant to join our Visitor Services team. This public-facing role plays a key part in delivering an exceptional visitor experience by leading guided tours, supporting self-guided exploration, working in the museum shop, and assisting with the museum’s growing calendar of public programs and special events. Because many programs take place outside regular museum hours, weekend and evening availability is an important part of this position. Ideal candidates are personable, dependable, and passionate about engaging the public with history.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct guided tours of the Davenport House, including general and specialty tours, providing in-depth knowledge and engaging storytelling about the house’s history.
- Work in a customer service and sales role in the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy Museum Shop.
- Supervise and support self-guided tour periods by engaging with visitors, answering questions, and ensuring visitors interact appropriately with the museum spaces.
- Provide prompt and accurate answers to visitor inquiries regarding the museum’s history and exhibitions.
- Monitor museum rooms and visitor flow to maintain safety and security.
- Assist with visitor check-in, setup, execution, and breakdown for public programs and special events, including programs held on weekends and after regular museum hours.
Requirements:
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of museum visitors and program participants.
- Comfortable using point-of-sale systems, handling money, and processing transactions.
- Flexible and adaptable in a dynamic work environment, with the ability to respond to shifting needs while maintaining a positive and professional approach.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and move throughout the museum as needed.
- Reliable and punctual, with a professional demeanor.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including Saturdays, occasional Sundays, and evenings. Weekend and after-hours programs are an important component of this role.
- Interest in supporting public programs, special events, and community engagement activities.
- Interest and/or background in history, art history, museum studies, public programming, hospitality, or a related field preferred.
Compensation:
$15 per hour
Part-time position, 15 hours per week
