What are the responsibilities and job description for the Solutions Engineer position at Datalab?
Company Description
At Datalab, we train state-of-the-art language models that read documents with human-level accuracy and power the next generation of AI products, workflows, and research.
Our models - Chandra, Surya, and Marker - have become the backbone of document intelligence, with more than 50,000 GitHub stars and adoption across top tier 1 AI research labs, Fortune 500 enterprises, and government agencies.
We've grown to 7-figure ARR with ~7x growth in 2025, driven by a lean, senior team that operates with high autonomy and deep technical ownership.
Backed by founding members of OpenAI, FAIR, and Hugging Face. We move fast, ship often, and we're hiring builders who do the same.
Role Description
We’re looking for an engineer who can work directly with technical customers and guide them from first evaluation through production rollout. You’ll scope projects, own POCs, troubleshoot edge cases, and contribute back to the product to make future deployments smoother.
This is a high-ownership role that blends technical execution, customer empathy, and product judgment. You’ll spend time both in the field and in the codebase by supporting evaluations, improving developer experience, and shaping how we deliver our technology at scale. The role sits close to the founders and is core to how Datalab grows with customers.
As a small and fast-moving team, roles are fluid. This work spans pre-sales, post-sales, forward-deployed engineering, and even elements of support. You should be energized by the opportunity to wear multiple hats and dive in wherever you can have the most impact.
Day to day you will:
- Own technical discovery, scope architecture and propose solutions for customer use cases, lead demos, and run proof-of-concepts.
- Build and maintain internal tools, scripts, and templates that make installations faster and more reliable.
- Diagnose and resolve complex integration, performance, or infrastructure issues.
- Collaborate with customers on an ongoing basis to tune latency, throughput, and resource efficiency for their workloads.
- Work closely with the founders on go-to-market initiatives and technical strategy.
- Feed customer insights back into product and engineering to guide roadmap decisions.
Ideal Candidate
You thrive at the intersection of engineering and customer relationships. You take satisfaction in helping teams evaluate, adopt, and succeed with technology that actually works.
You operate with high autonomy and accountability, but also with a strong team mindset. You treat customers as partners and your colleagues as collaborators. You’re proactive about communicating progress, setting clear next steps, and keeping everyone aligned.
We’re eager to work with someone who has:
- 2 years in a solutions engineering or technical customer-facing role.
- 3 years of fullstack development experience building APIs and/or developer-focused products.
- Experience in early-stage or fast-growth startup environments.
- Shipped and supported large-scale production systems, and can confidently debug real-world environments.
- Ability to manage multiple active deployments and stay organized under shifting priorities.
Bonus points if you:
- Familiarity with document AI, OCR, or structured-extraction systems.
- Exposure to enterprise security and compliance (SSO, SOC 2, IAM, private cloud).
- Enjoy writing technical content or case studies, and feel comfortable (or even energized) leading webinars, and other technical speaking opportunities.
