What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Reclamation Technician position at Daphne Utility Dept?
Purpose of Position: To operate, monitor, and maintain wastewater treatment plant systems and related equipment.
Essential Functions: (Must be able to perform these functions with or without a reasonable accommodation).
- Provides control operation and support in accordance with all established regulations, standards and procedures to ensure the proper treatment of wastewater; conduct visual plant inspections and monitor plant equipment, for proper operation.
- Makes adjustments in preventive maintenance and reports faulty equipment or problem situations to Lead in a timely manner.
- Reads and monitors computer data, gauges, meters, and charts associated with maintaining logs/records of maintenance.
- Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep facilities, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, performing repairs, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety.
- Communicates status of plant operations to Lead or other appropriate personnel; communicates information pertaining to current plant conditions, malfunctioning equipment, problem situations, or other issues.
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Assists in maintaining inventory of department equipment, chemicals, parts, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement materials.
- Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, checklists, activity reports, sludge reports, gas reports, polymer reports, maintenance records, inventory records, or other documents.
- Regular attendance is required as outlined in the company’s attendance policy including some nights and weekends.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: (these are required to perform the essential functions of the job).
- Must be able to operate various machinery, equipment and tools associated with plant operations, which may include a computerized monitoring system, screw press, dryer, utility truck, tractor, dump truck, welding machine, drill, drill press, grinder, circular saw, pipe wrench, pole saw, chain saw, lawn mower, weed eater, leaf blower, backpack sprayer, vacuum cleaner, mechanic tools, carpentry tools, hand tools, testing materials, radio communications equipment, or general office equipment.
- The ability to train in the operation and maintenance of Screw press and associated equipment in the production of Biosolids.
- Must be able to operate a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, system monitoring, database, Internet, e-mail, or other computer applications.
- Must maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations as they pertain to position.
- Must be able to perform job task and exercise independent judgment with a high level of accuracy.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively, work under pressure and to prioritize.
- Must be able to proficiently read, write and communicate clearly in English.
- Must be able to maintain a positive and professional attitude and an effective working relationship with, and among coworkers.
- Must be able to travel throughout the Baldwin County area regularly and out of town occasionally – for training or continued education.
- Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
- Must possess effective communication skills with ability to handle difficult people or situations.
- Must be able to use hands, fingers and wrist repetitively, using a keyboard.
- Must be able to stand and walk around regularly, both inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather and on uneven terrain.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull objects and materials in excess of 50 lbs.

Experience and Education Requirements
- High school diploma or GED; and
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Vocational/technical training in wastewater treatment plant operations and equipment maintenance - Preferred
- Previous experience and/or training involving wastewater treatment plant operations, screw press operations, and equipment maintenance - Preferred
- Must possess and maintains a valid Alabama driver’s license and be insurable.
- Must pass a drug screen and criminal background check.
Working Conditions
Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, hazardous materials, toxic agents, machinery, vibrations, or traffic hazards.
Must be available for on call duty as critical personnel during Hurricanes, inclement weather or other situations that would threaten facility operations.
