GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

The Educational Interpreter facilitates communication between students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have language deficits, and their peers, teachers, and other school personnel. Services provided may include sign language interpreting, oral transliteration, cued speech/language transliteration, and transcription services such as Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART), C-Print, and TypeWell. The interpreter ensures that students have equitable access to the educational environment as outlined in their IEPs, in compliance with IDEA, 8VAC20-81-40, 22VAC20-30, and 34 CFR 300.34(c)(4)(i).

Essential Functions

  • Provide interpreting and/or transliteration services in various educational settings, including classrooms, assemblies, extracurricular activities, and meetings.
  • Adapt interpreting methods to suit the communication needs of individual students, which may include American Sign Language (ASL), Signed Exact English (SEE), oral transliteration, cued speech, or transcription services.
  • Collaborate with the educational team to support the student's communication needs and educational goals.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials and consulting with educators to understand lesson content and objectives.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to the Code of Ethics for Educational Interpreters.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the development of communication plans for students.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities to maintain and enhance interpreting skills and knowledge of educational practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Proficiency in sign language and other communication modes used by students.
  • Understanding of the educational interpreter's role within the school setting.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of child development and educational practices.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and adherence to ethical standards.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in interpreting or related field preferred.
  • Valid certification or qualification as required by the VDOE for educational interpreters.
  • Experience working with children in educational settings is preferred.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS

  • Work is performed in classroom and school environments.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • Regular contact with students, teachers, administrators, and parents.

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated annually by the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and/or the Director of Services for Exceptional Children, in accordance with school division policies and procedures.
