The College seeks an adjunct instructor of Graphic Imaging Technology for the upcoming spring semester beginning in January 2026. The part-time instructor can prepare to teach in a hybrid format to serve students in-person and online.
Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946, and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.
Danville Community College seeks an adjunct instructor to teach introductory photography courses (PHT 101). The primary responsibility for the adjunct of GIT Instructor for introductory photography courses is to teach students the fundamentals of digital and film photography, including camera operation, composition, lighting, exposure, and post-processing techniques. The instructor will guide students in developing both technical skills and artistic vision, preparing them to produce professional-quality images. Additionally, the instructor would teach video techniques, which addresses the fundamentals of video technology and non-linear video editing. Focuses on the aesthetics of time-code editing using current industry software. Teaches a student to shoot and capture video and record and edit sound, and combine artwork, animation, video, and sound in the creation of professional-quality original video projects.
The ideal candidate will foster a supportive learning environment, demonstrate industry expertise, and integrate current photographic technologies and software into the curriculum.
Additional responsibilities are listed below:
- Teaching specific classes in the designated discipline
- Developing course syllabi and instructional materials
- Maintaining records, assigning grades, and assessing student progress
- Adhering to policies, procedures, and regulations of DCC and the VCCS
- Maintaining current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization
Teaching assignments may include day and evening classes for program-placed and non-program-placed students.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Associate’s Degree or diploma from a regionally accredited institution in Photography, Visual Arts, or a closely related field or a related field of study
- 2 years of related industry experience
- Demonstrated professional experience in photography with a strong portfolio of work
- Proficiency with digital cameras, lighting equipment, and photo editing software
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in teaching or mentoring in photography or a related field is preferred.

- Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in Photography, Visual Arts, or a closely related field or a related field of study
- 5 years of related occupational experience
- Prior teaching experience at the high school or community college level
- An established relationship with are industry partners and vendors
- Experience with studio lighting setups for portrait, product, or commercial photography.
- Familiarity with photography-related software beyond Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom (e.g., Capture One, Affinity Photo, or Premiere Pro for video integration).
- Experience in portrait, commercial photography, or fine arts photography.
- Ability to mentor students in portfolio development for career or academic advancement.
- Participation in professional photography associations or certifications (e.g., Professional Photographers of America – PPA).
- Experience organizing and/or participating in exhibitions, galleries, or showcases.
- Knowledge of copyright, intellectual property, and ethical considerations in photography.
- Ability to integrate interdisciplinary approaches, such as combining photography with video, animation, or graphic design.
