GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Under the supervision of the Director of Services for Exceptional Children, the Assistant
Director of Services for Exceptional Children is responsible for supporting the
implementation, compliance, and monitoring of special education and related services,
ensuring that students with disabilities are provided a free and appropriate public
education in the least restrictive environment. The assistant director helps coordinate
services, supervises key programs, collaborates with school staff and community
agencies, and supports instructional quality and operational efficiency across the
Division.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Coordinate with school administrators to assure compliance with local, state, and
- federal special education requirements
- Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional programs and related services for students with disabilities
- Monitor special education program operations to ensure compliance with IDEA,
- VDOE regulations, and grant requirements
- Assist in preparing and submitting required local, state, and federal reports and
- applications
- Analyze student achievement data to support decision-making related to instructional programming and student outcomes
- Provide leadership and support for the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Supervise and support the Division’s Therapeutic Day Treatment program and school nursing services
- Assist in the recruitment, training, and evaluation of special education staff,including instructional paraprofessionals
- Provide coaching, feedback, and professional development to improve instructional practices in special education classrooms.
- Collaborate with external agencies and service providers to coordinate comprehensive services for students
- Maintain knowledge of current legal trends, best practices, and research in the field of special education
- Convene and support special education and gifted advisory committees
- Communicate program goals, services, and updates to families, staff, andcommunity stakeholders
- Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Required Master's Degree in education or the substantial equivalent.
- Minimum of five years of successful experience in a school setting or substantial experience in project management (program oversight/management) and leading groups of people.
- Experience in program compliance, instructional supervision, or central office leadership preferred
- Endorsement in Administration and Supervision required
- Must hold or be eligible for Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in the appropriate area
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS
Work is typically performed in the school setting. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds and
other limited physical activities are required. Daily contact is made with students, other
teachers, and administrators in person and often by telephone, email, and/or in writing.
EVALUATION
Will be evaluated annually on the effectiveness by which one has carried out the above
responsibilities
Salary : $96,869 - $140,405
