Job Title: High School Band Director & Music Teacher Location: Danvers High School, Danvers, Massachusetts Reports to: Building Principal and Director of Fine Arts Overview Danvers High School seeks a dynamic and collaborative music educator to serve as High School Band Director and a key leader within the district's thriving performing arts program. The successful candidate will join a supportive music department that values artistic excellence, student leadership, innovation, and community engagement. The High School Band Director is responsible for directing the school's instrumental music program, teaching a variety of music electives, and fostering meaningful musical experiences that inspire students to develop as performers, creators, and lifelong music-makers. The position includes leadership of the high school band programs, participation in community and festival performances, coordination of student travel experiences, and close collaboration with fellow performing arts faculty. Danvers Public Schools maintains a strong tradition of music education and offers numerous opportunities for professional growth, program development, and additional stipend positions within the performing arts department. Responsibilities
  • Instrumental Program Leadership
  • Direct and oversee the Danvers High School band program, including rehearsals, performances, adjudicated festivals, concerts, and special events.
  • Develop and maintain a standards-based instrumental music curriculum that promotes musical literacy, technical proficiency, creativity, collaboration, and artistic expression.
  • Prepare students for performances at school concerts, community events, state and regional festivals, and other public appearances.
  • Foster a culture of excellence, inclusivity, student leadership, and positive ensemble citizenship.
  • Recruit and retain students in the instrumental music program through outreach efforts and collaboration with middle school music staff.
  • Support students in pursuing honor ensembles, auditions, leadership opportunities, and collegiate music pathways. Classroom Instruction
  • Teach music courses that may include:
  • Concert Band
  • Intro to Piano and Music Theory
  • AP Music Theory
  • Music Technology
  • Arts Production
  • Other music electives based on departmental needs and candidate expertise Responsibilities include:
  • Designing engaging lessons aligned with the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Utilizing technology and contemporary instructional practices to enhance student learning.
  • Differentiating instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Assessing student growth through both formative and summative measures.
  • Encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration through performance-based and project-based learning experiences. Performance, Festival, and Community Engagement
  • Coordinate and prepare ensembles for participation in Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association (MICCA) festivals and other adjudicated events.
  • Assist students in preparing to audition for Northeast Senior District and All-State Festivals
  • Organize and oversee performances at school, district, and community events.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the performing arts program through active engagement with families, community partners, and local organizations.
  • Collaborate with district administrators and performing arts staff to identify performance opportunities that enhance student learning and visibility within the community.
  • Support the department's commitment to providing students with authentic and meaningful performance experiences beyond the classroom. Student Travel Coordination
  • Coordinate major student travel experiences, which typically occur on a biennial basis and may include regional, national, or destination-based performance tours.
  • Work collaboratively with district administration, travel providers, families, and booster organizations to ensure successful planning and implementation of travel opportunities.
  • Manage travel logistics including itineraries, transportation, accommodations, student documentation, budgeting, communication, and supervision plans.
  • Ensure all travel experiences comply with district policies and prioritize student safety, accessibility, and educational value.
  • Assist with fundraising and promotional efforts associated with student travel programs. Program Administration and Operations
  • Coordinate logistics for rehearsals, performances, festivals, and special events.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of instruments, music, uniforms, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Assist in the development and management of program budgets and purchasing requests.
  • Coordinate transportation, equipment movement, facility usage, and event planning as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies and procedures related to student safety, supervision, and program operations. Collaboration and Communication
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with students, families, administrators, and colleagues regarding program expectations, student progress, and upcoming events.
  • Collaborate closely with the high school choral director, theater director, and district performing arts leadership to support a cohesive and comprehensive performing arts program.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary initiatives, school events, and department-wide projects.
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, alumni, and community stakeholders. Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate actively in department meetings, faculty meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in music education.
  • Maintain active membership and involvement in professional organizations when appropriate.
